laundry Basket wins title The Wawasee Adult Basketball league crowned Laundry Basket as its season champion last night. The Laundry Basket team earned it by beating Sturonjac, 73-72 in the title game. Mark Sumpter led the winners with 22 points while Jay Kaiser poured in 27 fix* Sturonjac. Sturonjac advanced to the championship contest with a 68-52 win over North American Wire Die Monday night. Comment on Sports SARASOTA, FLA. - What are the two most improved teams in the majors? They could be Sparky Anderson’s old club and new club — the Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers. The Reds made a race of it last year but, in the stretch, didn’t have enough pitching. They’ve added John Denny from Philadelphia and Bill Gullickson from Montreal. With Mario Soto and Tom Browning, that might be four reliable starters, which Pete Rose didn’t have last season. What does Sparky have to boast about with his new club, the Tigers, a team which ran over everyone in 1984? He too has added two good pitchers — Frank Tanana and Dave LaPoint. While LaPoint is the key, Tanana showed he could pitch at Tiger Stadium. The other key is Willie Hernandez, who suffered through a sub-par year last season. This relief ace is over his arm problem — and that isn’t known yet — the Tigers may be in again for 1986 if Hernandez recaptures his sensational form of the ’B4 season.
