Warriors drop to 7-J 2 — Central too tough for Wawasee
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor According to John Wysong, there’s nothing like being exhausted after a win. For now, his basketball Warriors will have to settle for sweat and defeat. Despite another good effort, Wawasee lost a 59-48 home court contest to Elkhart Central last Saturday. “With their athletes, we needed three guys hitting,” said Wysong. “We were just one player short tonight.” Wawasee (7-12) could get no closer to eight points in the second after the Blue Blazers (13-6) had built a 31-19 lead at the half. Guard Mark Reim paced Central with 12 points while 6-7 Center Chuck Lamb added 11. Tom Stransky, Mike Obbs and Eric Gall each added nine points to round out a balanced attack. The difference was free throws. The Blue Blazers had 31 opportunities from the line and hit 17. The Warriors had just 10 tries, making four. The key to this gap: Central’s size and strength in the middle. Wawasee fouled out of position, sending the Blue Blazer’s to the stripe more frequently. “That’s a pretty good team,” said Wysong. “We did a pretty good job with who we had to go against. We would have beaten a lot of teams tonight.” Tim Mangas had another good night, scoring a game-high 19 points. Jon Evans had one of his finer outings, tallying 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. “Evans had an excellent game,” said Wysong. The coach also commented on Wawasee’s shot selection. “We executed our shots better than in most of our games. With their size inside, I felt some of the outside shots we took were the result of good decisions, ” he added. The Warriors may have gotten the shots they wanted, but few

dropped. The hosts canned 22 of 58 attempts for 38 percent. Central was a little better, hitting 21 of 44 for 47 percent. “I like what I saw out there,” added Wysong. “It’s just that there’s nothing better than feeling exhausted after a win, and I want my team to be rewarded with a win for its efforts.” Try It With Bremen Having finished their home schedule, the Warriors will venture to Bremen this Friday at 6:15 p.m. for a road date with the Lions. This contest will conclude the regular season and the Northern Lakes Conference slate as well. Junior Varsity Loses Matt Dick scored eight points while John Erasure and Eric Jones added seven each for the JV Warriors as they lost to Central, 52-35. The defeat drops Wawasee to 5-14. Traviolia, Lantz reap state titles at Indianapolis
(EDITOR ’S NOTE: The facts for this story were gathered and furnished by Mail-Journal employee Derk Kuhn, who provided the sports editor with thorough information concerning the brilliant efforts of two very fine young men, who also happen to be excellent athletes and students.) INDIANAPOLIS - “They are outstanding kids who have reaped the harvest of a lot of time on the mats,” said Wawasee Wrestling Coach Rich Welborn. But it was Wawasee that reaned a nrettv eood harvest

when Brad Traviolia and Lance Lantz first put on Warrior colors as freshman. They were winners from the start. They were ultimate winners Saturday. Both became Indiana state champions in wrestling. They claimed their respective weight classes in front of a large crowd at Market Square Arena. As a result, Wawasee had its first state champion male athletes. Traviolia took the 155-pound title in style, scoring on take downs and back points. Friday night, he tended to business with a

technical fall win over LaPorte’s Jeff Henry. Then on Saturday morning, he enjoyed another technical fall win over Robert Beamon of Indianapolis Broad Ripple. An easy 11-1 decision over Wes-Del’s Bobby Johnson followed in the semifinals. Traviolia finished off a perfect season (42-0) with a 9-3 decision over John McCloud of Beech Grove in the championship match. Lantz (42-1) followed his script in textbook fashion. He pinned Greenfield Central’s Troy
Thomas at the 5:50 mark Friday night. He notched another pin in the quarterfinal round, nailing South Bend Riley’s Greg Pink at 5:06. Lantz reached the finals with a hard-earned 4-2 decision over Jamie Madrigal of East Chicago Washington. But Lantz couldn’t come back for an encore since his title match opponent, Chesterton’s Todd Walsworth, suffered a back injury in the semifinals. Lantz won by forfeit. “It’s great to win it, but I miss the feeling of being out in front of

everybody in the spotlight,” he said. The spotlight shined on Lantz anyway. He won the coveted Ward E. Brown mental attitude award for excellence in athletics and academics. Lantz ranks third in a class of 206, sporting a GPA of 3.962. He finished his wrestling career with a 92-12-1 record. Traviolia ranks fifth in the same class and ended his career With a 110-4 mark —a school record. Both are also first choices on the Indiana All-State
Academic wrestling team. Both have worked hard for their glorious moments. Wawasee, as a team, took fourth in the state with 54.5 points. Evansville Mater Dei won overall honors with 92 points while Delta and Indianapolis Cathedral tied for second with 75 each. “When it rains, it pours. Even here in Market Square Arena,” summed up Welborn. It certainly did on Wawasee. It rained pride, joy and victory.
