Solomon 801 l killed when train hits truck at crossing
Soloman James Ball, 54, r 5 Syracuse, was pronounced dead at the scene of a truck-train crash on Friday, Feb. 21. Death was due to a broken neck. Ball was born in Marion on February 20,1932, the son of Forrest and Mary Ball. On August 3, 1972, he married Mary Ann Brock. She survives. He was a resident of Syracuse for 25 years, a truck driver for Merchant Metals of New Paris, and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Navy. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Shanda Ball, at home, Linda Stahley and Susan Stouder, Syracuse, and Anita Lindamood of Minnisburg, Ohio; two sons, Travis, at home, and Phillip of Syracuse; two stensons, Lonnie Wilma Howk Former Western Rubber Co. Employee Wilma Howk, 83, 14091 CR 50, Syracuse, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, where she had been admitted the week earlier. Death was due to heart failure. Mrs. Howk was born in Kosciusko County on September 13,1902. On November 2,1921, she married Fem Bunger. He died on September 27, 1962. She then married Donald Howk on October 12,1963. He preceded her in death on August 22,1979. In 1967, she retired from Western Rubber Co., Goshen. Surviving are one son, Hilary Dale Bunger, Weston, Conn.; six grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and a twin sister, Florence Miller, Syracuse. She was preceded in death by a son, Glenwood Bunger, and five brothers and sisters. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at Rieth, Rohrer & Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, with burial following in Solomon Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the heart fund.

Johnson Employee Os Amish Acres Services were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Thompson & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, for Rolland L. Johnson, 67, 26721 US 6 E., Nappanee, brother of Erma Chambers, Milford. He died at 1:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in his home. He had been ill since June 1985. Johnson was boro in Nappanee on June 30, 1918. On August 22, 1942, he married Fern B. Metzler in Nappanee. She survives. A lifetime area resident, he was a former truck driver for Nappanee Milling Company and Supersweet Feeds and since retiring, he had worked at Amish Acres. A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren. Additional survivors are three daughters, Sherry Root and Mrs. Roger (Teresa) Hamsher, both of Nappanee, and Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Hart, Warsaw; one son, Samuel Johnson, Nappanee; eight grandchildren; and two other sisters, Mrs. Curtis (Bernice) Smeltzer, Wakarusa, and Mrs. Ralph “Dave” (Gwendlyn) Tobias, Nappanee. He was preceded in death by one sister and one granddaughter. Rev. Roy Stern officiated at the service and burial was in Union Center Cemetery. Memorials may be made to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County or to the American Cancer Society.

Kelley was treated and later released.

The EMS responded to a call on Wednesday, Feb. 19, where a two-year-old female was having trouble breathing. Upon arrival, the parents had removed mucous and had given mouth-to-mouth. The patient had resumed normal breathing, whereby the parents took the patient to the doctor. On Wednesday, Feb. the EMS was called to aid a 41-year-old man whose horse had fallen on him. The patient, complaining of pain in the pelvic region, was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital. An 88-year-old male patient was transported by the EMS on Thursday, Feb. 20, to Goshen Hospital. On Thursday, Feb. 20, a caller reported an auto accident on Orn Road. An 18-year-old female patient complained of soreness on her right cheek and also tenderness in the left rib cage. A second 18-year-old female patient complained of pain in the right
Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at Harris Funeral Home, SR 13S, Syracuse. Rev. Michael Johnson conducted the service and burial was in Syracuse Cemetery. Harold H. Hoppel Former Bendix Corp. Employee Harold H. Hoppel, 88, a resident for the past five years of Lakeland Loving Care Center, Milford, died Thursday, Feb. 20, at 10:51 p.m. in the emergency room of Goshen Hospital. Hoppel was born on March 16, 1897, in Bremen. On January 7, 1971, he married Martha Hostetler. She preceded him in death on February 7,1984. A lifetime resident of the area, he was a former employee of Bendix Corp., and the US Civil Service. He was a member of the Syracuse Senior Citizens and Milford Christian Church. Surviving are nieces, nephews, and a sister-in-law, Pauline M. Hostetler, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at YoderCulp Funeral Home, Goshen. Fred Walls, associate pastor of Milford Christian Church, conducted the service. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Goshen, on Monday. John F. Neidermeyer Former John F. Neidermeyer, 78, r 7 Columbia City, father of Mrs. Larry (Linda) Kinsey, North Webster, died Saturday evening, Feb. 22. He was born in Union Township, Whitley County, on October 29,1907, to Fred and Rhoda (Snyder) Neidermeyer. On February 23, 1934, he married Grace Londt. She survives.

Syracuse Emergency Medical Service was called to a personal injury accident at 11:06 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at CR 300E and CR 1100 N. Timothy Hahn, 31, r 4 Nappanee, complained of pain to the right shoulder, small abrasions to both hands, a bump to the right side of the head and numerous abrasions to the hands and face. He refused to be transported to the hospital and was advised to see a doctor if any problems arose. Gladys L. Lahman, 80, 442 Sir Lancelot Lane, Cromwell, was taken to Goshen Hospital Wednesday, after passing out and falling. She suffered an injury to her left shoulder area. The EMS was called at 12:55 p.m. Charles Rock, 72, 506 S. Front St., Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital Friday, Feb. 22, after becoming ill while at England’s Family Restaurant. The EMS was called at 7:28 p.m. Stephen Farber, three, r 2 box 570-A Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital Monday, Feb. 24, after becoming ill. The EMS was called at 6:23 a.m. Leßoy Sheppard, 56, 3801 E. Shore Dr., Bremen, was taken to Goshen Hospital Tuesday, Feb. 24, after being involved in an industrial accident. The EMS was called to Liberty Homes at 8:14 a.m., when a roll of insulation fell on Sheppard, hitting him on the back of the head. He complained of pain between the shoulders.

His father was Daniel Joyce. He married Bertha Chappey in 1936. She preceded him in death in 1974. In 1984 he moved to Leesburg from Griffith. He retired from JVL Steel Co. in East Chicago. Surviving are one son, James, Leesburg; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Graveside services were held at Memory Lane Cemetery, Schererville. Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, was in charge of arrangements. Frank R. He died Friday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw. The son of Frank and Thoebe (Flack) Troxel, he was born in Carroll County on May 20,1897. In 1928, he moved to North Webster from Mulberry. He married Perlin Rex on December 24,1918.

She preceded him in death in 1960. Before retiring, he owned and operated Troxel Funeral Home of North Webster from 1935-1960. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 747, Knights of Pythias, all of North Webster, and served as secretary for the North Webster Cemetery Association for a number of years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Max (Wilma) Hoffer, Palestine; two granddaughters, Mrs. Kim (Chris) Aker, North Webster, and Mrs. Stanley (Janis) Sutton, Noblesville; and two greatgrandchildren. Rev. O. Rex Lindemood officiated at the service. Burial was in Fairhaven Cemetery, Mulberry, where graveside services were held. Evelyn A. Smith Beu Freukßu Employee Evelyn A. Smith, 65, r 3 box 119, Syracuse, died Monday, Feb. 24, at 6:55 a.m. at Goshen Hospital. Death was from an apparent heart attack. The daughter of Rudy and Beuna (Doyle) Robins, she was boro on July 16, 1920, at Hoxie, Ark. On March 3, 1946, she married W. F. Smith. He survives. She moved to the Syracuse area 15 years ago from Indianapolis. She was former coowner of Lynhurst Marathon Station in Speedway and was also employed for several years at the Ben Franklin Store in Syracuse. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel and WMSC of that church. Surviving with her husband are her mother, Beuna Doyle of Hoxie, Ark.; two sons, Robert Smith and Donald Smith, both of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; one sister, Louise Berry; and one brother, Jeff Robins, both of Hoxie. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister. Services were held this afternoon (Wednesday) at 2:30 p.m. at Conkle Funeral Home with Rev. Harlan Steffen officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Harris Funeral Home, SR 13S, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements.
