Traviolia, Lantz win semi-state titles
GOSHEN — Through all the success Wawasee has had on the mat this year, there have been two standouts. It was no different in the semi-state wrestling meet at Goshen High School last Saturday. Seniors Lance Lantz (167) and Brad Traviolia (155) defended their semi-state titles of 1985 with impressive outings, winning their respective weight classes for the second straight year. They also advanced to the state meet at Indianapolis (Market Square Arena) this coming weekend. The Warriors also received help from first rounds wins by Brett Traviolia (138) and Jeff Welborn (132). These two were later eliminated in second round action. Mike Noel lost his opening round match to Charlie Horsman of Oak Hill. In all, Wawasee finished in a

Lady Warriors perfect at 7-0
The Wawasee girls’ nastics team renwned undefeated with a decisi j home meet win over Elkhart Central last Thursday. The Lady Warriors scored 93.75 points while the visitors managed 59.35. The win pushes their record to 7-0. Wawasee claimed four firsts. Jeanine Gunn was a double winner, taking the vault (8.1) and the floor exercise (9.1). Raeni Rinker was tops in the uneven bars, scoring 8.75. Angie Graff completed the sweep with a first in the balance beam (8.35). Graff also took third in the vault with a 7.8 showing. others who placed were: Sherry Daniels, second in the uneven bars ((6.9); Nicole Iwankowitsch, third in the uneven bars (6.85); Irma Cruz, second in the balance beam (7.35); Tressa Littleton, second in the floor exercise (8.25) and Cruz, third in the floor exercise (7.3). Junior Varsity Wins The junior varsity squad also remained undefeated, scoring 46.8 points to Elkhart Central’s 32.1. Saby Vale sparked the effort by winning the all-around competition (24.90). Anne Pohl enjoyed a fine outing with a first (beam, 7.2) and two seconds (vault, 7.1 and floor exercise, 7.2). Gretchen Huffman claimed the other win, taking the floor exercise with a 7.7 score. Second places were earned by Jill Corson (vault, 7.1) and Lara Tracey (beam, 5.65). Wawasee will be hosting sectional and regional competition. Sectionals will begin March 8 at 10 a.m. Regionals will start March 15 at 11a.m. Boilers face tough games The Purdue University mens* basketball team will be facing a tough series of games in the upcoming week. Coach Gene Keady’s Boilermakers presently own an overall record of 19-7 (8-5 in the Big Ten). These next three games could very well determine Purdue’s fate as a front runner in the Big Ten as well as its status for getting a solid berth in the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers will host Ohio State (12-10) Thursday, Indiana (17-5) Sunday and Illinois (17-7) next Thursday. The Boilermakers are led by Troy Lewis, who is averaging 18.7 points a game. Sophomore Forward Todd Mitchell is scoring 15.6 an outing while Freshman Center Melvin McCants is producing 10.6 tallies a game.
fourth place tie with Fort Wayne Northrop and Adams Central, scoring 51.5 team points. Delta easily claimed its seventh straight semi-state crown with 119.5 points. Bellmont was second with 78 while Bishop Dwenger of Fort Wayne claimed third with 76. “I think a lot of people found out that Dwenger was for real,” said Coach Rich Welborn, referring to the Carroll Regional champion. “And we’ve had a good year, too. This is probably the best wrestling team in the history of Wawasee. We had balance up and down the line and we certainly had talent.” Traviolia (38-0) won his championship match by virtue of a 9-5 decision over Carroll’s Paul Voight. The 155-pounder got to the title round by defeating WesDel’s Bobby Johnson, 11-1.

Johnson was also undefeated and was last year’s defending semistate champion. Receiving a first-round bye, Traviolia began his day in the second round with a technical fall win over Rob Neuenschwander of South Adams at the 5:16 mark. In addition, Traviolia’s title win over Voight marked the second time he wrestled the Carroll opponent in two weeks. He had beaten him in last week’s regional. Both matches were hard-earned. Lantz (38-1), who suffered his only loss of the season in the second round of last week’s regional, showed that he recovered from the setback in good fashion. He overwhelmed Yorktown’s Shane Southerland, 11-1 in the opening round. In the second session, Lantz encountered Goshen’s Mike Whittrig for the fourth time this season and beat him, 9-5. Though Whittrig won 33 of 37 matches, all four defeats came courtesy of Lantz. The 167-pounder took care of things quickly in the semifinals, pinning Tom Mick of Northrop at the 2:52 mark. Lantz then capped off a sweet day with a 13-3 decision over North Wood’s Gary Urednick.
“Taking what those two (Lantz and Traviolia) have proved so far, I’d say they would have as good a chance as anyone else to win state,” said Welborn. Warriors lose to North Wood, 50-37
NAPPANEE - With all the I strategy basketball requires, it’s 1 easy to forget the simple things. < Last Friday night, the Wawasee I Warriors outlined a solid game ] plan and executed accordingly. i But they didn’t make the shots. s What resulted was a 50-37 Northern Lakes Conference loss to < North Wood. Wawasee canned on- 1 ly 36 percent of its field goals. 1 “We played hard,” said Coach 1 John Wysong after his team dropped to 7-11 (2-4 in the NLC). “We 1 took good shots and contained j their big men as best as we could. * The difference was our shooting. 1 We couldn’t hit the bucket.” 1 The Warriors did hang close for much of the first half. Yet, the 1 Panthers slowly broke away after Tim Mangas (who led all scorers with 20 points) converted a layup, cutting the margin to ; 18-17. Forward Robin Wenger, who led the winners with 10 points, answered the challenge with a f short jumper. Then Daric Gess- < inger added a long jumper and a < layup (at the buzzer) to make it 24-17 at the half. Wawasee looked to slip back in- 1 to the contest when Mangas nail- < ed two more layups, narrowing i the count to 24-21 in the third stan- ( za. But a three-point play by Center Scott Crist along with i some deadly outside shots by i Todd Cleveland and Gessinger 1 pushed the margin back to seven ( points. 1 Wenger and Cleveland opened 1

the fourth period with successive baskets, increasing the lead to double digits. North Wood kept it that way with crisp shooting (54 percent for the contest) while the Warriors kept missing good shots. “We just flattened in the fourth quarter,” said Wysong. “And North Wood is not that bad of a team. They have some solids players.” Wawasee continues to play without one of its solid players, senior guard Dave Kistler, who has been sidelined with an injury. His absence was felt in Friday’s loss. Meanwhile, the Panthers upped their overall record to 5-12 (3-3 in the NLC).
