Custom built cabinets at Beemer Enterprises

Beemer Enterprises, Syracuse, now in its 28th year, is a manufacturer and broker for custom built cabinets including brokering cabinets for Coppes-Napanee, a 110-year-old custom cabinetry business. Bill Beemer, president, stated his business has continued to prosper through past years of difficult economic situations. The Syracuse firm has a complete design and sales service available with Cindy Wells doing a lot of the design work for Beemer Enterprises. Salesmen contact the dealers who sell the products to the consumers. “We are doing a lot of work on the Spink’s Condominium project on Lake Wawasee,** remarked Beemer, adding the building industry is coming back. Business for the local firm comes from renovation and remodeling projects. He commented about the multi-unit housing trend where the square footage is reduced, yet they are being better designed and more efficient. Yet on the other end, houses costing over $150,000 are larger and more elegant with cabinetry not only in the kitchen and bath but in libraries, bedrooms, dens, work and hobby rooms. Beemer Enterprises has a total of four salesmen covering 90 outlets in a three-state area. At one time there were 120 outlets, however, Beemer felt the reduction would allow greater efficiency in operations with only accounts active in the industry being services. Products of Beemer’s are shown at fairs and open houses as well as sponsoring an average of three kitchen clinics per month. These clinics are designed to give customers a better idea of the special purpose cabinetry on the market. The clinics include appliance cabinets and cabinetry used in new areas, such as dens and bedrooms. Beemer is active in the national marketing program in working the entire United States through custom design specialist retail dealers along with working with Coppes-Napanee.

Coppes Line Beemer, along with William R. McKinnon, Syracuse, James Dunn, Elkhart, and Paul Harrold, Wilmett, 111., a group called Nappanee Investors Group, Inc., purchased Coppes, Inc., Nappanee, in November, 1985, with the hope of reviving the lingering business to its former pre-eminence. With the purchase of the business also came the firm’s trademark Coppes-Napanee Kitchens. Dunn, who was elected president of the investment group, owns Capital Van Company, Elkhart, with wide experience in the van conversion business. Beemer is vice president in charge of sales and marketing, and has been in kitchen cabinetry sales for 32 years. McKinnon, is secretary-treasurer, with wide experience in the mobile home industry. Harrold serves on the firm’s board of directors in charge of the new company’s retail outlets in Nappanee, Chicago and Florida. Coppes, Inc., has for many years been a manufacturing fixture in neighboring Nappanee, with its business offices and showroom located at 401 East Market Street. It operates in a 240,000 square foot plant, but the new owners hope to reduce the manufacturing area to 70,000 square feet, to better streamline the operation in keeping with their intentions of bringing more efficiency to the operation. Beemer stated the entire activity for Coppes-Napanee Kitchens covers the United States but is very strong on and west coast, central South California, New York and Florida. Currently the firm is in the process of putting together additional sales marketing people in areas still open. “Our sales goals through Beemer Enterprises and Coppes-Napanee is to expand the sales and marketing program,” stated Beemer, who added, this includes product improvements and new products.
