Southeast Bay Marina, Wawasee Boat Co. provides services
Douglas Anderson, his wife, Carolyn, and son, Russell, are in their 10th year as owners of Wawasee Boat Company, Inc., and sixth year as owners of Southeast Bay Marina, both located on Lake Wawasee. “We want to continue at the level it’s been at and improve it,” remarked Anderson, stating in the 10 years as owner of Wawasee Boat, the business has ‘continued to grow,” with 1985 being the best sales year so far. He commented the last three years have been good years and it is very rare to have that many years back to back. “Our goal is to provide complete service, primarily for the boating residents of Lake Wawasee and Syracuse. This is centered on sale of new boats, service, repair and maintenance and storage through the winter months.” Wawasee Boat Company, now in its 57th year, was originally owned by Ken Harkless, who started the business in 1929. Since then it has continued to expand its

What began as a small office on Lake Wawasee gradually developed into a franchise realtor in 1979. Century 21/Beaty Realtors aims to increase its share in the business market. To this point, it has been successful. “We deal in residential, commercial and lake property,” said Ric Schaekel, vice president of the corporation. “But the reality is that much of our business comes from lake associated property. That takes up a good 70 percent because the turnover rate on the lakefront is much higher than the main residential areas here,” he added. Real estate sales have climbed steadily for the last five years, according to Schaekel. “We’ve increased (sales) at a good rate, except for ’B2. That was a bad year overall, but we did ok since our location is a plus with the lake market. Beaty Realtors is a member of the Kosciusko County Board of Realtors and the

facilities making it a complete marina. The largest growth has been in the number of boat sales and boat lines offered. The marina is the oldest Century dealer and largest Century inboard dealer. Other lines carried by the marina include: Rinker, Viking Deck Boats, Chris Crafts, Ski Supreme Ski boats, J.C. pontoons and Johnson motors. In addition to these boats, the marina has expanded to sailboats. Wawasee Boat Company carries MacGregor 22-foot and 25-foot sailboats, Hunter and S-2 sailboats. Southeast Bay handles the Rinker Built boats, Chris Craft, J.C. pontoons, MacGregor sailboats and S-2 sailboats. Johnson Motors are also available. The marina is a full service marina with sales, service, boat rentals, dockage, storage and fuel. 4 Wawasee Boat handles custom made wooden boats and does a large volume of wood repair and restoration. The wood pro-
Multiple Listing Service and is headed by Dick and Bob Beaty. The franchise also has a five-member sales staff: Tom Prickett, Ivan and Kathryn Rinehart, Linda Jaggers and Louise Rex. While claiming the corporation hasn’t changed much the last three years, Schaekel admits that having a prized location has its benefits when real estate agencies in other areas struggle. “Lake property holds up in value better than anything else,” he said. “It’s the majority of our business, which is not to say that we don’t care about residential and commercial aspects. We are well-versed in those areas as well as condominiums. The turnover rate dictates where the business is and right now, much of our listings concern lakefront or channel property.” The average price for Wawasee Lakefront property is $159,000, according this year’s estimates.
gram continues to grow with the current 1985-1986 winter season doing the largest volume of wood restoration in any one year, commented Anderson. In the past Wawasee Boat Company employees have restored a 1930 20-foot Chris Craft, 1948 Ventnor and 1937 Chris Craft. In 1984 employees restored a .935 Gar Wood and close to 12 wooden Chris Crafts and Century’s in various stages and structural and cosmetic repairs. Wawasee Boat Company draws boats from all over the state. “We are one of a few doing this in the state,” commented Anderson. Boat sales hit a new high as did boat storage in 1985. Anderson reported Wawasee Boat Company store over 600 boats in 1985. In 1980 the marina added a large decker storage building and in 1981 a storage building for large cruisers. Also a new service area was added, giving Wawasee Boat Company the largest indoor shop for service in Northern Indiana. The building has over 4,000 square feet of indoor shop space. Anderson stated, “We certainly plan to continue the high quality of service at the boat company.” Anderson handles the service department at Wawasee Boat with the help of Brian Glaser who is assistant service manager. In addition, Anderson handles the boat sales during the Winter months. Mrs. Anderson manages the office. During the summer months part-time employment runs to a high of 22. During the summer Alan Lamley acts as company salesman. Lamley and his wife, Ginny, spend their winter months in Florida. Mrs. Lamley helps in the office during the summer. Anderson remarked the couple does an excellent job for the company. Bob Ruth has managed Southeast Bay

BIGGEST AND BEST — Wawasee Boat Company is one of the largest complete marinas in the state of Indiana, excluding on Lake Michigan. Douglas Anderson, his wife, Carolyn, and their son, Russell, are in their 10th year as owners of the company. Wawasee Boat Company shown via an aerial view is situated on seven acres of property with pier space for 55 boats and features eight storage buildings, a showroom, two shops, office and marine stores.
SIXTH YEAR OF OPERATION — Southeast Bay Marina, Lake Wawasee, is owned by Douglas and Carolyn Anderson and managed for the third year by Bob Ruth. It is in is sixth year of operation on Lake Wawasee. The marina is a full service marina, including boat rentals. Southeast Bay Marina, named for its location, has 250 feet of lake frontage, 90 lake front pier spaces, a gas dock, cement boat ramp, large showroom, office space, a marine store, boat storage facilities and an in-out storage.

Marina and Club for the past three years and is in charge of the facilities and boat sales. “He’s done a really fine job,” commented Anderson. During the summer months, Ruth is assisted by his wife, Audry, in addition to several gas and service personnel to assist customers. Wawasee Boat is situated on seven acres of property with pier space for 55 boats and features nine storage buildings, a showroom, two shops, office and marine storage. Jerry Wilson, Fort Wayne, is operating a board sailing instruction and rental program at Southeast Bay. This was started in the summer of 1983. The biggest asset for Southeast Bay is the lake frontage. “People desire renting a lake front pier slip,” remarked Anderson, which lead the owners to shift toward a club plan situation in 1984. “The club plan has been very successful” remarked Anderson. The plan was started to make pier renters a part of a club plan. There are restrooms, private showers, washers and dryers for members’ use. Anderson wants Wawasee Boat Company to be a place where families can enjoy their visit and added he often spends time showing people around the marina. Wawasee Boat Company and Southeast Bay have grown to where they needs quite a bit of management talent to run it. Anderson added, “We don’t want to lose the friendly, family atmosphere. We want to see change, but we don’t want to see the flavor of the lake change.” Anderson feels the company is one of the largest complete marinas in the state of Indiana, excluding those of Lake Michigan. The owner concluded by saying, “We think we’re the biggest and the best on the lake and we want to stay that way.”
