Leisure Pools offer complete service on pools and spas

Although Leisure Pools is still in its first year of business, it has fast become the leader of swimming pools and equipment in the area. It has received recognition beyond this area, too. Last October the owners, Jimmy and Donna Conder, won a four-day trip to the Bahamas for their outstanding pool sales in a contest sponsored by Recreonics Corporation in Indiana. Located at 111 East Main Street in Syracuse since May of ’BS, Leisure Pools offers complete sales, service, installation, and maintenance on its pools and spas. Specializing more in the swimming pool area, the business offers both in-ground and above ground styles. According to owners Donna and Jimmy Conder, the 16x32 foot and the 20x40 foot pools are among the most popular size. But, Leisure Pools can also accommodate most any size or shape if a buyer chooses to have his swimming pool custom designed. As with any pool the company sells, Jimmy Conder is at the site to insure that the pool has been properly installed. This is true even with the pool kits that Leisure Pools sell. Although he doesn’t do any of the actual installation on kit pools, Conder is there to supervise the buyers workmanship to prevent installation problems. This is not a service the Conders are required to supply, but it is one that has helped place Leisure Pools among the leaders in its field. As well as the performing the installation work, Leisure Pools also handles any servicing needs. Jimmy Conder, who has had numerous years of experience in the swimming pool business, has taken schooling on repair work, whether it be a mechanical problem on the pump or a cosmetic repair to the pool liner. Some people choose Leisure Pools as their dealer for its regular maintenance service. The business will open up the pool at the start of the season as well as closing it for the winter months. If a customer chooses, Leisure Pools will even maintain the pool throughout the summer. Os course, the

Golden Razor is a Redken salon

Operating a business from your home has its good and bad points, according to Golden Razor owner Nancy Shields. “Obviously the good out Ways the bad. It does make it convenient.” Golden Razor, 701 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, opened in 1974 when Dave and Nancy Shields purchased the home. The salon started out as a barber shop with Shields operating the shop. His wife joined him when they decided not to compete against each other, as she was working in another salon in town. When the two joined forces the barber shop became a unisex salon and the pair began “bucking” the state. Mrs. Shields stated at that time a barber and beautician could not work side by side in the same shop. This law was later changed. The Shields’ operated the salon together until approximately 1980 when Mrs. Shields took over the business. Golden Razor, which is basically a Redkin salon, offers the basic salon services of hair cutting, permanents, coloring and styling for men, women and children. In addition to 1 Redkin supplies several other salon products are used. In March 1985 a tanning bed was added. “It was a great success, I’m glad I did it,” remarked Mrs. Shields reflecting back to 1985. She added the bed is a very seasonal business in a resort area, where in a city the use would be constant. The peak season for the tanning bed in the first year was March through May. Golden Razor employs one other stylist in addition to Mrs. Shields. Pam Place has been employed for the past seven years. The salon is open six days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A unique aspect of Golden Razor is the home has been used for a beauty shop for at least 50 years, according to what Mrs. Shield’s has been told. She commented a

number of times someone would come out to clean or add chemicals to the pool would depend upon the amount of use the pool gets. Leisure Pools often suggests that pool owners avoid the daily hassle of adding chemicals to the pool by installing an automatic chlorinator, which releases chlorine as required into the pool. Leisure Pools carries this as well as many other pool supplies including slides, diving boards, heaters, solar blankets, Pool Vacs, chemicals, sun domes, decorative fountains, and a large variety of unusual inflatable toys. Last year, residents may remember the 126-inch alligator at Leisure Pools. This year, that inflatable critter is being outdone by a 23-foot dragon. The store will also carry plastic boats in the shape of giraffes, zebras, and tigers. If these sound like “kiddie” toys, that’s correct. But, they are specifically designed for adults, too! While swimming pools are great for some, others prefer the enjoyment of a spa or hot tub. Leisure Pools carries numerous name brand portable and in ground spas including Jacuzzi, Continental, and Down East, which is manufactured in Fort Wayne. As well as a variety of brand names, its spas come in a variety of shapes including round and octagon. Most are made of acrylic and are extremely easy to care for. A new form of a spa, which is growing rapidly in popularity, is the swim spa. This type of spa is largely used for exercise purposes since it has pressure jets to swim against. In any of their spas, the Conders encourage the use of bromine instead chlorine in the chemical treatment. Although chlorine is fine for pools, the gases given off by it in the confined area of a spa can often irritate eyes and produce strong odors. For all swimming pool and spa needs, Leisure Pools is the place to go. This summer the Conder’s daughter, Toni, will be helping with inside sales and their son, Jeff, will help with the installation. Watch for an announcement of Leisure Pools’ reopening for the summer season.

lady operated a beauty shop from the same location as where her shop is now located and that the plumbing was found already installed when they purchased the home. “It’s almost like this location was intended to be a salon from years ago. Mrs. Shields stated plans for her salon is just to keep up on the styling education and to maintain a steady business, like she has for the past 10 years and to keep her nose to the grindstone. “I think as far as my knowledge now, the tanning bed was the last major change. I have no intentions of adding on or enlarging.” The training Mrs. Shields has received includes advance haircutting from Hair Surgeons Designers, Cincinnati, Ohio; regional education classes from Redkin and motivational classes by Redkin along with in salon workshop training. . 1 ITO aglajli v* r j n ® rjJluU I =
