LONG WINTER’S NAP? — While it may appear that the Patona Bay Boat Service is in for a nap, quite the opposite is true as the marina prepares boaters for another year of enjoyment in the Lakeland area. Three generations of Patons have manned the business, with expansion and improvements over the last 75 years resulting in the largest boat marina facilities in the » Northern Lakes Region.
Patona Bay Boat Service is committed to excellence
Conveniently located on the west edge of Lake Tippecanoe, Patona Bay Boat Service has been providing generations of customers with their boating needs for over 80 years. George Paton I came to northeast Indiana in 1904, from Indianapolis, eventually becoming a fixture in the Lakeland area after years of selling canoes, sailboats and fishing boats. After purchasing the first practical outboard in the area in 1909, Paton put the powered boat within the water framework of Lake Tippecanoe and was well on his way to becoming a major seller of outboards in the area. From a small shop at the north end of Lake Tippecanoe emerged the present shop on the west edge of the lake, where two other generations of Patons successfully landed careers in the boating service through their commitment to excellent service. George Paton II built the first ever boathouse, while handling a complete line of Evinrude outboard motors and accessories before handing over the operation to a third generation of Patons, who have been expanding facilities ever since. George Paton 111 handles the operations of the marina and leaves the paper work and
Logan-Rogers Realty moves to new location
Ernie Rogers, owner of Logan-Rogers Realty, has a moving operation in more ways than one. In addition to moving real estate via sales, the company itself has moved across SR 13. The need for more space in which to develop some new real estate marketing concepts has prompted Rogers to move into the building across the street between Thornburg Drug Co. and the new Pilcher Shoe Store which he bought in 1985 and which was remodeled. It was the former Berniece’s Beauty Shop. Rogers’ company had been on the west side of SR 13 since 1982, having been started in his home in 1980 and been in other Wawasee Village quarters for two years. For those interested in local trivia, Rogers confides that there never has been a partner named Logan at the firm. Logan was Julie Rogers’ maiden name. Since he thought he might someday want to expand to the Goshen area and the name Logan is well known in his wife’s home town, Rogers did
accounting to brother Bob, who is a certified public accountant. Proven professionals, both Patons have raised the business to its present level — that of being the largest boat marina in the Northern Lakes Region. Located on a private shore of the lake, Patona Bay includes water front facilities including gas pumps, boat ramps, hoist service, forklifts, covered water storage, buildings for winter storage and a snack bar where sandwiches, cold drinks and coffee are served throughout the boating season. Having expanded to six buildings, Patona Bay is currently revamping a showroom, in an effort to increase its water ski line, which should be completed this spring. The marina also demonstrates new and used boats for prospective buyers, which Paton considers vital in helping the customer to “see and feel the action of the boat before putting cash down for payment.” With eight full time employees during the winter months and several additions to the staff during the summer, Patona Bay has succeeded in providing its Lakeland customers with friendly and professional service for three generations, with several generations of customers reaping the benefits.
some long-range planning and named the realty company Logan-Rogers. Rogers was born and raised in Syracuse and is proud of the Syracuse-Wawasee area. He has been involved in the shelter industry since 1967. His realty company sells waterfront, residential, commercial, condos and farms-all kinds of real estate. “The year 1985 was an excellent year for the realty company,” says Rogers. “I expect an even bigger year in 1986.” Listings with pictures of properties for sale in the area will be on display in the big front window of his office so customers can “check them out” at their leisure before contacting a sales person for more information. The sales staff at Logan- Rogers Realty includes Rogers, his wife, Julie, Jeannine Schrock, Peg Bailey t Dean Troup and Nancy Justice. Rogers states that a major project of his firm this spring and summet will be serving as sales agents for lots in the new Fox Run subdivision south of Wawasee High School.
