State Bank of Syracuse is part of First Indiana Bancorp
“The year 1985 was an exciting year for the State Bank of Syracuse,” said Bank President James E. Caskey. During its past 87 years of service in this community, the bank has worked closely with its customers, whether individually or as businesses, to meet their financial needs. One method the State Bank employs is its “Officer Call Program,” which was enacted during the early part of 1985. In this program, the bank goes to the customer to accommodate his needs. “In July,” Caskey said, “a new Indiana Ranking Law was passed, legalizing bank holding companies to own more than one bank in more than one county.” Thus, in October, final approval was received to allow First Indiana Bancorp, parent company of the First National Bank of Elkhart, to acquire the State Bank of Syracuse. In conjunction with this merger, the State Bank of Syracuse opened a full service branch in Warsaw. Gayle Lackey as been appointed as assistant vice president and manager of that branch and Catherine Cindrich was made assistant manager. Plans for another branch, to be located in Columbia City, were also in set in motion when ground broke in November of ’BS. Timothy Sutton has been appointed assistant vice president and manager of the Columbia City branch after its scheduled opening of February 10. “These developments will allow the State Bank of Syracuse to be an important part of First National Bank of Elkhart’s effort to build a Northern Indiana regional bank holding company with strong banks and goodmanagement,” said Caskey. Last year, the Wawasee Village Branch celebrated its 10th anniversary. This year, the Hatchery Branch will be doing the same. Other happenings at the bank during the past year include the availability of simple interest loans and the increase of assets from $43,143 million to $45,423 million. In June of 1984, Paul Phillabaum replaced Ken Harkless on the board of directors.
