Gymnasts off to 5-0 start

Team Description: Young Gymnasts. Much Potential. Undefeated in five meets. Needs enthusiastic support. “We really have a good team,” said Coach Tracy Sumpter. "We’ve improved every meet, but we want more crowds.” If the Lady Warrior gymnasts keep winning they way they have been, Sumpter may get her wish. Last night, Wawasee traveled to Elkhart Memorial and won by scoring 92.35 points. Memorial had 88.05. Jeanine Gunn took a first and a . third, winning the floor exercise with an 8.3. She claimed third in vaulting with a score of 8.1. Teammate Kathy Campbell shared honors with Gunn in that event with the same score. Shelly Daniels won the beam with a 7.3 showing. Angie Graff was third, scoring 6.75. In addition, Tressa Littleton took third in floor exercise with an 8.25. But the best performance came from Raeni Rinker, who scored a 9.1 in the uneven bars. Junior varsity winners included Saby Vale, 7.15 in thir vault; Sherry Daniels, 7.7 in the uneven bars; Anne Pohl, 7.25 in the floor exercise and Daniels, 7.0 in the balance beam. Westview And Concord Defeated Wawasee beat Westview in a home meet Monday night, outscoring the visitors with 83.6 points to 59.85. Sumpter decided to use most of her junior varsity performers, but the results were just as good. Pohl was a double winner, claiming the beam (7.65) and the

floor exercise (7.75). Vale won vaulting with a 7.4. Vale also took second in floor exercise (7.05) and third in the beam (7.0). Daniels (Sherry) was second in the beam, scoring 7.45. Irma Cruz scored 7.0 in floor exercise for third. Jill Corson (7.0) and Julie Schmahl (6.95) place second and third in vaulting, respectively. Last Thursday, the Lady Warriors edged Concord by a score of 92.45 to 90.75. This was a crucial meet for Wawasee since Concord was highly regarded competition. Winners were Campbell (8.5) in floor exercise and Rinker (8.35) in uneven bars. "We’re getting better on the balance beam,” said Sumpter. “That’s a key event for us.” The coach also emphasized that meets are more exciting than in the past. "They focus on optional routines,” Sumpter explained. "They cut down on time and make things more interesting since the girls can do what they want.” Wawasee hosts DeKalb this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Play Tippe Valley Thursday Lady Warriors roll into sectionals

ByDAVESTRAUB Sports Editor When Becca Stiver sewed the winning layup with two seconds left against Bremen at home last Thursday, the Wawasee girls’ basketball team maintained what it has been building — momentum. ‘ The Lady Warriors have also built a six game winning streak. And it has come at the best time since Wawasee can carry this momentum right into the postseason. “I don’t know if it was our best game, but it was our biggest win,” said Coach Dale Brannock, whose team finished the regular season with a 13-5 record (4-3 in the Northern Lakes Conference). "We stopped Bremen’s winning streak (at 17 games) and with that win, we were able to continue the momentum we’ve established.” It was also a sweet win for the Lady Warriors since Bremen was the only team to beat Wawasee during the regular season last year. The Lady Lions are now 17-2. < It took a clutch performances by Michelle Harter (24 points, eight rebounds) and Lori Galloway (14 points, nine rebounds) to pull out the dramatic win. Wawasee and Bremen traded baskets throughout the contest. It remained that way with 21 seconds left in the contest as Leah Ann Adams hit a 20-foot jumper to tie it at 47. After the Lady Warriors regained possession and brought the ball past the half court mark, Brannock called time out to set up a play with six seconds remaining.

Following a quick inbounds play, Ann Vitaniemi lofted a perfect pass to Stiver, who was rutting towards the hoop. Stiver was open and hit an uncontested layup to secure the win. Beth Feldman led Bremen with 19 points and 14 rebounds. West Noble No Problem The Lady Warriors traveled to West Noble Saturday and coasted to a 60-40 victory. Harter paced Wawasee with 22 points and all but one team member scored. JV Climbs To .500 The Lady Warrior junior varsity team added a pair of wins this past Week to finish its season at 9-9. Wendy Lung scored 12 points to spark a 27-26 victory over Bremen. Wawasee won again on Saturday with a 27-25 decision over West Noble. Looking To Warsaw Sectional Now that the regular season has concluded, the important part has arrived. It’s tourney time, and Brannock knows that the past means nothing. "We’re putting everything into our game against Tippe Valley,” he said. “We drew the same team last year and it’s always more difficult to beat them in the sectional.” What the coach was saying is that the 69-45 blowout win over Tippe Valley three weeks ago is no reason to discard the firstround contest. “We played them at home,” reasoned Brannock. “This time, we’re playing them on a nuetral court.” Wawasee plays Tippe Valley tomorrow night at 8. The Warsaw-Triton contest begins at 6:30. Tickets can be purchased Thursday from 8 a.m. until noon and the cost is $4. Only sectional tickets will be sold.

If the Lady Warriors should win, they will play the winner of game one at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. "Ever since the second half of our earlier game with Warsaw (a 45-34 loss on Jan. 9), it’s been uphill,” said Brannock. “Our inside people are.doing a good job and our bigger line-up (Using Galloway and Kelly Brooks as dual centers while moving Harter to guard) has worked better. “We haven’t peaked, but we’re coming together more and more,” he added. Wawasee goes into the postseason in good health, which is important. "The big thing now is to make sure they’re healthy,”

Hr KEEPING UP — Bremen’s Karen Oberly races down the court, but can’t get past Ann Vitaniemi (24) on this fastbreak. The Lady Lions couldn’t get past Wawasee on the scoreboard either as the Lady Warriors pulled out a last-second 49-47 victory, ending Bremen’s 17-game winning streak. (Photo by Dave Straub)
