“We’re looking for a few good families,” says the home-finder for one foster care agency. There is an acute need for families willing to provide care for children who are having trouble at home. Judy Troutman, a local social worker, says, “Good foster homes are not necessarily your typical middle-class, two-cars-in-the-garage kind of family. “Some of our best foster homes might be homes about which other people say. ’Why on earth were they approved as a foster family?' But we know from experience they are able to provide good foster care.” A child becomes a foster child when the birth parents, for whatever reason, cannot take care of the child. Sometimes it’s because the child has problems; sometimes it’s unemployment, alcohol abuse, or marriage break-ups: sometimes a family’s style of operating is harmful or abusive to a child. Why Bother? Some foster parents become involved because it’s a small way to help others, to change someone’s world just a little, to be everyday ministers of God’s love, to experience joy as they see children respond positively to love and good care. Most foster parents will quickly tell you. “It’s not for everyone,” but it’s a practical way to make a positive difference. Bobby was nine years old when he came to live with the Putnams. His hair and scalp were crusted from not being shampooed; he had no underwear; dirt lined his body, and first thing his foster parents did was to offer him a nice warm bath and some new clean clothes In the days that followed, they learned that he had rarely eaten a meal at a table and so didn’t know what table manners were. He seemed uninterested in the world around him — didn’t ask the usual questions ‘that children are so full of. They soon learned that he was fairly bright in school — but his parents had not consistently sent him, and so he was way behind. Bobby is fairly typical, even though there is no “typical” foster child. Each one comes from a different background with particular needs and gifts. Some of the challenges for foster parents are to appreciate the child for what he or she is, not become too attached because the placement is supposed to be temporary, and to care about the child. Role Models One- of the things that foster parents can do is to serve as good role models to the birth parents who may have grown up with very poor role models for parents. foster parents who were able to see the parents of “their three foster children as people who needed to grow. As opportunities presented themselves, they acted as parents to these parents in such away as to help them get guidance. ” The happy result was that they did grow and ultimately felt like okay people and were able to take back their children.

That’s the ideal. There are many reasons why it is sometimes impossible to help foster children or birth parents grow in their situations. Foster parents who give their best and do their best don’t need to plague themselves with feelings of failure. Write for the free leaflet. "Foster Home Care,” to: Margaret Foth.
