Lady Warriors coast by Plymouth, 62-36

The Wawasee girls' basketball team outscored visiting Plymouth, 38-15 in the second half, coasting to a €2-36 win over the Lady Pilgrims last night. It was the fourth straight win for the Lady Warriors, who evened their Northern Lakes Conference record at 3-3 and now stand 11-5 overall. Forward Michelle Harter paced Wawasee once again, scoring a game-high 19 points as well as grabbing nine rebounds. Centers Lori Galloway and Kelly Brooks added 15 and 10 tallies, respectively. The Lady Warriors struggled throughout the first half as a tenacious Plymouth squad (4-13) managed to hang dose. Despite falling behind by a 16-8 count, the visitors chipped away and tied it at the halfway point of the second quarter. Both teams traded baskets until the Lady Pilgrims took a short-lived 21-20 lead. A basket by Harter and a pair of free throws by Brooks put Wawasee ahead just before intermission.

The Lady Warriors opened the second half with eight unanswered points. Four of them were scored by Galloway while Harter and Becca Stiver added two points each. Plymouth trimmed the lead to 34-26, but the Lady Warriors went on a 14-3 scoring tear to claim a 48-29 advantage after three quarters. “We were sloppy the first half and the girls knew that,” said Coach Dale Brannock. “They came out played well the second half . They have a lot of pride. ” Much of the second half blitz was due to good defense, tough rebounding and crisp passing. The majority of Wawasee’s points came inside the 10-foot range. The Lady Warriors shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded Plymouth, 31-25. The Lady Pilgrims hit just 27 percent of their field goal tries. “We re coming together in spots,” added Brannock. “And we’re playing better defensively.”
