This means substantial savings, particularly on luxury items such as top-name French perfumes and English crystal. Bahamian merchants are able to charge 20-35 percent less than U.S. prices on perfumes, jewelry, watches, cameras, china and other goods. It is because they pay less tariff than their U.S. counterparts If you know that you are going to be looking for a particular camera or watch, check the prices on those items in your hometown discount shops. That way, you will instantly know if the Bahamian prices are better. You will also know if they are good enough to warrant the shipping charges that may be incurred on larger items. Tourney re-scheduled
The first annual Snowball Softball Tourney sponosored by the Indiana Cahpter of the March of Dimes has been rescheduled for Feb. 8 and 9. The tournament will be played at New Paris. Toby Newston, volunteer chairman erf the event, announced that there is still time to organize a team for this fun event. Anyone interested in entering their team can contact the chapter office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for information. An entry fee will be charged to each team. This year, the tournament is being sponsored by Stroh’s Brew-
plete an awesome team performance. Outstanding second place efforts were turned in by: Eliseo Roa (112), who was edged by Goshen’s Andy Ecklebarger, 5-4 for first; Don Kauffman (177), who was beaten by North Wood’s Ryan Miller, 12-4 and Scott Shoemaker (185), who was pinned by Rochester’s Ed Richard at the 1:27 mark. Shawn Jones (105) claimed third with a consolation win over . North Wood’s Kent Frenger, 15-0. Looking Ahead With an impressive season behind his team, Welborn was looking ahead to bigger possibilities. “We’re at the point where we want to win the sectional,” said the coach. “After that, we want to be competitive at the regional, semi-state and state levels. It won’t be easy. At the sectional, East Noble (the host team) can push us. Bishop Dwenger and North Side (both of Fort Wayne) are very strong and will be tough in the regionals. When we advance to those levels, it will be more of a struggle,” added Welborn. The Warriors did not struggle much during the season, winning 15 of 16 dual meets. They did it with balance in all 13 weight classes, sprinkled with outstanding individuals who can continue wrestling until late February. Traviolia (Brad) and Lance are ranked first in the state in their respective classes and both are still unbeaten with 30-0 records. Next is Dunithan (28-2), whose two defeats came to Bellmont’s Paul Gunsett, one of the states’ best wrestlers. Other standouts are Traviolia (Brett), 22-7-1; Welborn, 25-4-1; Roa, 23-8;-Sturgill, 26-5; Shoemaker, 20-12 and Kauffman 18-12-1.
Iwankowitsch and Angie Graff followed with respective scores of 7.7 and 7.3. Graff also took first in the beam with a 7.15. Schmahl was second, scoring 7.05. “We’re looking smoother,” said Kim Conrad, who shares the head coaching duties with Tracy Sumpter. “But there has to be improvement on the beam. We have tostayonit.” Wawasee hosts Concord Thursday in its first home meet. Then on Monday, the Lady Warriors will host Westview prior to Tuesday’s meet at Elkhart Memorial.

Warriors beat Goshen
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor Wawasee’s 21-point fourth quarter spurred a 49-37 Northern Lakes Conference win over Goshen last Friday night. Guard Tim Mangas pumped in a gamehigh 25 points and played solid defense to help Wawasee get is sixth win overall. The victory snapped a threegame losing streak for the Warriors (6-8). It was also Wawasee’s first league win of the season, and the 200th since its basketball program began. Following Brian VanderReyden’s layup, which tied the score at 28 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Warriors tallied 10 of the next 13 points with buckets by Jon Evans, Bill Hutchinson and Mangas. The ’Skins Ryan Sorrell countered with four free throws, making it 40-35, but the Warriors iced it with a nine-point run. Mangas scored seven of those points while Guard Dave Kistler banked in the other tally. “We played a pretty solid game,’’ said Coach John Wysong. “Everyone contributed to the team concept and that was just enough to do it.’’ However, Mangas was the difference. He canned nine of 13 field goal attempts and hit seven of eight from the charity stripe. He also shared team rebounding honors with Hutchinson, grabbing five boards. “We played them (Goshen) at the right time,’’ said Wysong. “We needed this game because we were down.” Wawasee overcame 39 percent field goal shooting with deadly free throw marksmanship. The Warriors converted on 15 of 17 for 89 percent. The Redskins also shot 39 percent from the floor, but hit only seven of 11 charity tosses. Goshen enjoyed a 26-23 rebounding edge over the host Warriors. “Other keys to this game were turnovers and our ability to make free throws,” added Wysong. “We had only four turnovers, which indicates that we made Contest set Saturday The Syracuse Knights of Columbus Council 6323 will be Sponsoring its annual basketball free throw contest this coming Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Syracuse Junior High School gym. good decisions and executed well.” The Redskins had 15 miscues. Fan Enthusiasm The Warriors benefited from one of the most vocal home crowds in recent games.
