St. Andrew's: An active church

By GLEN LONG Staff Writer St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, located at the intersection of County Line Road and SR 13 just north of Syracuse, is a church where many things are going on. Rev. Phillip Frew, pastor, is pleased to discuss the many church projects. He especially enjoys visiting the children who attend the daily nursery school which teaches children of two age groups, threeyear olds and four- and five-year olds, the basic skills of getting along with others in an enjoyable manner. The church, which has a congregation of about 400 members, also provides facilities for a Cub Scout troop, an Alcoholics Anonymous group and an Alanon group to assist families of alcoholics. The congregation is very supportive of the Lakeland Day Care Center which is located just south of the church ball diamond, consistently supports the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association in all of its programs, and was one of the churches which started the summer boat-in church at Oakwood Park on Lake Wawasee. St. Andrew’s provides the thrift shop on South Huntington Street in Syracuse and very actively supports the mission work of the United Methodist Church world wide. Two of these specific areas are providing medical care for tubercular children in Haiti and training nurses in Liberia. A new ministry to allow members of the congregation to use some of their musical talents was begun last Thanksgiving as the church’s new hand bell choir was first heard at a community service sponsored by the local ministerial association. The hand bell choir is under the direction of Russell Sonafrank 11, director of music ministries. Tracy Gleissner, who teaches the children in the nursery school, says she enjoys the fact that she can help prepare her charges for kindergarten. She states, “I like being part of their first experience in formal education.” She now has 15 three-year olds who attend on Thursday and Friday and 31 four- and five-year olds who are there on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Each child in the school attends either in the morning or the afternoon, two hours and fifteen minutes for the four- and fiveyear olds and two hours for the three-year olds. Gleissner has been teaching at St. Andrews for two years, having earned a twoyear degree in early childhood education at Manchester College. She keeps her students involved in activities designed to be fun while they are learning skills. These activities range from play time to painting pictures with story time, snack time and rest time happening in between. Rev. Frew has been pastor at St. Andrew’s for 10 years, having been a pastor in Hammond for three years before coming to Syracuse. His wife, Gloria, teaches at the Lakeland Day Care Center. Since she lives close she gets to open up each weekday morning at 5:30 a.m. to prepare to greet the early day care children. The pastor is on the board of directors of the Lakeland Day Care Center and points out that it is an extremely ' worth-while operation which requires the continued support of the community. He also states that the congregation enjoys a large increase in attendance at Sunday worship services in the summer when the Syracuse area is at its peak population size. St. Andrew’s was build in 1961, the congregation having moved from downtown Syracuse. At that time the local Methodist Episcopal group became St. Andrew’s and Calvary Uniited Methodist Church started from the old Evangelical United Brethren Church. The congregation considered several names for the church and a vote produced its name of St. Andrew’s. The church members get very involved in their church. The stained glass windows in the sanctuary were all provided by church members, as were several oil paintings and decorative hangings in the wellfurnished church lounge. Rev. Frew expressed his feelings on Tuesday afternoon about the shuttle explosion that morning in Florida. ‘My heart goes out to the families and children who sat and watched the disaster,” he said somberly. “I feel bad about any loss of life, like in head-on collisions on the highway.”
