Lady Warriors coast to 69-45 victory
ByDAVESTRAUB Sports Editor Wawasee blended size, strength and experience to near perfection last Thursday night. In fact, it may have been the best basketball outing to date for the Lady Warriors as they cruised to a 69-45 non-conference win over Tippecanoe Valley. It was an impressive triumph for Wawasee, now 9-5. Tippe Valley had won nine straight games and boasted a fleet line-up four talented sophomore players. But the Lady Warriors slowed down their quicker opponents with an effective full-court press and used their devastating inside game to overcome 36 percent field goal shooting. Forward Michelle Harter led Wawasee with 17 points. Center Lori Galloway added 15 while Anne Vitaniemi chipped in fl tallies. Vitaniemi also claimed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Warriors also got quality play from their reserves as Coach Dale Brannock emptied his bench throughout the second half. He was pleased to note that Shelley Brumbaugh, Belinda Whitridge, Heidi Brower and Traci Ostendorf responded with good performances, particularly in ball handling and setting up the offense. "We had good play from our subs,” said Brannock. “I was impressed with how they handled themselves out there and it shows that we’re starting to come together.” Wawasee had it together from the beginning, posting leads of four to eight points in the first half. By intermission, the Lady Warriors built a 33-23 advantage. Buckets by Vitaniemi, Harter and Galloway made it 39-25 early in the third quarter. From that point, Tippe Valley could not get closer than 13 points. Leading 41-28 halfway through the period,

Wawasee tallied 12 of the next 16 points to ice the contest. Jody Yochum paced the Lady Vikings (9-3) with a game-high 18 points. Leslie Miller and Lori Gray pitched in 13 and 10, respectively. All three players are sophomores. “I was impressed with Valley,” said Brannock. “Yochum and Miller are very good players right now. They have good hands and are good passers. The key for us was that we beat them from the free throw line and our big line-up was a little too much for them to handle/ ’ Proof of that assessment comes from important numbers, such as shots attempted and rebounding. Wawasee put up 67 shots to Valley’s 48 and out-rebounded the visitors by a 41-26 margin. Therefore, a combination of good defense by the Lady Warriors and costly turnovers by Tippe Valley made the difference. The Lady Vikings committed 29 miscues. Yet, Brannock was more pleased with Wawasee’s free throw shooting. The Lady Warriors hit 21 of 26 for 81 percent. “We’ve been working on free throws a lot more,” he said. Wawasee travels to Whitko tomorrow and will return to Northern Lakes Conference play with a home game against Plymouth next Tuesday. Junior Varsity Wins Wendy Lung’s 13 points proved to be enough offense as the JV Lady Warriors beat Tippe Valley, 25-17. Wawasee’s good team defense keyed the win. Swimmers moke it five straight wins
“We’re starting to bring it together,” said Wawasee Swim Coach Tim Caldwell after his Warriors stroked past North Wood, 105-67 at last night’s home meet. It was the fifth straight win for Wawasee, now 7-3 overall. “Team depth. That’s what’s doing it for us,” said the coach. “Sometimes, our distance people do it. Sometimes, our sprinters do it or sometimes, our strokers do it. We can also hit you with relays because we’re strong there, too. There’s no weakness any opponent can zero in on.” Last Tuesday, Wawasee blew past Mishawaka, 106-65. The Warriors claimed six firsts in that meet. A road date with Goshen on Thursday was next. Wawasee was up to the challenge, winning 97-75. Though the Warriors claimed just five events, their balance was the difference as they piled up numerous second and third place finishes. The Warrior swimmers can score points in any event at any time. Against North Wood last night, Wawasee posted seven winners. Victories were achieved in relays, strokes and sprints. As for diving, the Warriors achieved three personal bests as David Keener (223.30) and David Gilson (203.15) placed second and third, respectively. “Keener is really promising,” said Diving Swim dub record broken at meet The Wawasee Swim Club competed against the Fort Wayne Central YMCA last Saturday and lost. However, one club record was broken as Scott Berkey timed 1:20.405 in the 100-yard breastroke. That effort shattered his old mark in the same event. In addition, seven WSC members won their respective events. Winning events included sprint and distance freestyle races as well as individual medleys and strokes. The next meet will be Saturday, Feb. 1, at Manchester.
