Warriors drop to 5-7 Tippe Valley shoots down Wawasee ,

A hot second half shooting performance by Chad Bibler spurred Tippecanoe Valley to a 59-44 boys’ basketball win over Wawasee last Saturday night. Bibler’s 25 points led all scorers as the visiting Vikings upped their season record to 7-3 while the Warriors dropped to 5-7. “Rebounds were even, shots taken were even and there wasn’t that much of a difference in turnovers,” said Wawasee Coach John Wysong, searching for that one deciding factor. “I think the difference was style of play. They set us up with a lot of traps and they pressed us effectively. That’s what did it to us. We were taken out of our type of game. Things didn’t flow the way we wanted.” Things didn’t flow at all in the first half. Strong defense coupled with cold shooting hampered both offenses. Despite this, Tippe Valley staggered to a 20-14 halftime edge. “Another factor was that Tippe

Valley had a full week to get ready for us,” Wysong reasoned. “We were coming off a tough game against Northridge (a 72-55 loss) the night before and it’s always tough to come back and play a solid game two nights in a row.” The Wawasee mentor wasn’t taking any credit away from Wawasee’s strong opponent. He praised Bibler’s talents as well. “He hit some pretty tough shots,” said Wysong. “And (Dale) Miller played a solid game under the hoop for them.” Miller pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added 10 points to spark Tippe Valley’s inside game. But the real spark came from Bibler. He canned 10 of the Viking’s 17 points in the third quarter as the visitors opened a 37-26 lead going into the final eight minutes. The 6-3 senior forward swished eight more tallies in the fourth quarter. Bibler’s last points came courtesy of two free throws that put the Vikings ahead, 51-34,

which was their biggest lead. He hit 10 of 18 shots from the field and was perfect on five charity tosses. “At times, we may have had more passes than necessary, ”* said Wysong. “But aside from that, I’m proud that we played hard. We really are trying and we appreciate the efforts of the students and the community. We really appreciate their support and that’s what we need right now.” Wysong added that forwards Jon Evans and Bill Hutchinson had good games. Each scored 12 points to pace the Warriors. Evans claimed seven rebounds while Hutchinson had six. Guard Tim Mangas, who was held to just four points, dished out five assists. Goshen On Tap ’ Wawasee will host Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen this coming Friday. The Redskins own a 5-7 record and are 1-2 in league play. “I’ve been impressed with Goshen,” said Wysong. “They’re a hard-nosed, well-coached group of players.” Raiders Were Hot Three Northridge starters hit double figures as the Raiders coasted to a 72-55 Friday night home court win over the Warriors. Northridge shot 59 percent from the field and 82 percent from the charity stripe. The Raiders also enjoyed a 31-26 rebounding edge over Wawasee. Hutchinson paced the Warriors with 12 points. Dave Kistler and Mangas added 11 apiece. Junior Varsity Beaten Tippe Valley handed the Junior Varsity Warriors a 48-41 defeat. Basil Bonner scored a team-high eight points to lead Wawasee. Darin Atwood and Jon Erasure each added seven tallies. Comment on Sports WASHINGTON D C. The Chicago Bears’ coach and quarterback give that team the most bizarre image in the National Football League. On television shows, quarterback Jim McMahon comes off as something of a bad-mannered freak. Mike Ditka, the coach, projects a purposeful image of a tough guy disdainful of the media f and its reps. That’s a new twist in the age when television has everyone grinning a sweet smile — even Don Shula —for the camera. New twist though it is, it’s not an image that reflects much credit on either individual or on the Bears as an organization. Rather, the image is similar to today’s professional wrestling standard. There’s no doubt the Bears are the team of 1985 and that they i earned that distinction. No one questions Walter Payton’s 1 credentials or those of many of the other stars on the team. But, the quarterback and coach ! often come off as less than what is usually expected by more ini telligent fans. Sports quiz 1. Name the place where Super Bowl XX will be played? 2. Wasted space With the football season now at an end, once more we call attention to the waste of space each year by forecasters. Every newspaper with a sports section seems to succumb to the desire of its sports editor to predict how Saturday and Sunday’s games will end. Often, a full column of space is wasted on how this or that junior birdman thinks the games will come out. Often, the writer also knows very little about what he or she is predicting. With space as precious as it is now, surely some legitimate news could replace such speculation, an ego trip for sports writers.

Wrestlers whip Memorial

The Wawasee wrestling team finished its most productive season with a 49-19 home meet decision over Elkhart Memorial Saturday. It pushed the Warriors’ overall record to a best-ever 15-1. Their Northern Lakes Conference mark is 7-0. “I think we’re right where we should be at this point,” said Coach Rich Welborn. ‘‘But the most important part of the season is coming up. Hopefully, the kids can pick themselves up after a good regular season. What we really gear up for is the sectional.” Wawasee must gear up for the NLC meet first, which will be this coming Saturday. The Warriors will host the event and it will start at 9 a.m. ‘‘We’re looking at possibly six top seedings,” said Welborn. “But we won’t know for sure until the meeting Wednesday night. How the seedings go greatly determines how well we’ll do in the conference meet.” By winning the NLC in the regular dual meet season, Wawasee has already clinched a share of the title. If things go as planned this weekend, the Warriors should have an outright championship. However, Welborn is cautious. “It’s gonna be tough,” he said. “You gotta have depth to win something like this and I think we have it. But so does Goshen. Rochester and Plymouth can also be respectable.” In addition to an outstanding dual meet campaign, Wawasee has claimed its own invitational as well as the East Noble Invitational. Other good performances include a third place showing at the Mishawaka Invitational, Gymnasts beat West Noble The Wawasee girls’ gymnastics team opened the 1986 Season with a win at West Noble last night. In all, the Lady Warriors boasted four winners as they racked up a score of 87.4 to West Noble’s 75.8. “We didn’t compete up to par,” said Coach Tracy Sumpter. “The competition wasn’t that good. But there were some good showings.” Kathy Campbell’s 8.25 showing earned her top honors in vaulting: Jeanine Gunn placed third, scoring a 7.95. Raeni Rinker won the uneven bars with an 8.1. Campbell and Angie Graff completed the sweep with scores of 7.45 and 6.7, respectively. In the beam, Shelly Daniels’ 7.05 was good enough for first. Graff took third in that event with a 6.3. Gunn was tops in the floor exercise, scoring a 7.65. Julie Schmahl and Tressa Littleton placed second and third, with respective scores of 7.5 and 7.1. Wawasee claimed five winners in junior varsity competition. West Noble had only two members competing at this level as the Lady Warriors put together a score of 67.45. West Noble had only eight points. Steph Jamiel won vaulting with a 7.15; Nicole Iwankowitsch won the uneven bars with a 6.85; Saby Vale took first in the beam with a 5.0 and Jamiel won the floor exercise, scoring a 6.75. “They’ve got potential,” Sumpter said of her team “They just have to keep their heads together and improve.” Wawasee travels to North Wood this coming Saturday. The meet starts a 1 p.m. The first home meet will be Thursday, Jan. 30 against Concord.

which featured a host of stateranked teams and a second place outing at the Warrior Classic, where Wawasee won seven of eight dual matches. The only loss was to fifth-ranked Bellmont, 33-25. The Warriors are presently ranked ninth and feature two undefeated wrestlers: Brad Traviolia (155) and Lance Lantz (167) both sport 27-0 records. Jeff Dunithan (119) was also brilliant with a 25-2 mark, losing to Bellmont’s Paul Gunsett twice. Other standout performers were Jeff Welborn (132) at 22-4-1; Steve Sturgill (heavyweight) at 23-5 and Eliseo Roa (112) at 21-7-1. All Wawasee wrestlers boasted solid seasons. Here are other individual Warrior records: Mike Noel (98), 19-9; Shawn Jones (105), 14-8; Mitch Price and Bob Doerr (126), 4-5 and 9-8, respectively; Brett Traviolia (138), 19-7-1; Josh Lantz and Chris Yoder (145), 9-4 and 6-6, respectively; Don Kauffman (177), 15-11-1 and Scott Shoemaker (185), 18-10.
