North Webster a unique area
By GLEN LONG Staff Writer “North Webster United Methodist Chu -ch is uniquely located to serv j many people.” states 0. Rex undemood, who has been pasto there for eight years. His driv j and interest in the mission of t le North Webster church are vei y evident as ‘he discusses the many activities in which he and the church are involved. “Our church buildings are not used only on Sunday, they are available for various community uses,” says the pastor. “The oldest Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group in the tricounty area of Elkhart, Whitley and Kosciuskc counties meets here at 8 p.m. every Monday night, including holidays . This group has been meeting here for 30 years, ha/ing moved its meetings here from the original M and M Restaurant which was next to the present Thornburg Drugstore.” Rev. Lindemood adds that another AA gro jp and three other groups relating to alcoholics, ALNON and two groups of ALTEEN also meet at the church

Pastor Stateii Concerns The pastor states that he is proud of the fact that the church has two Sunday morning services, at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., which are both very well attended. He does add that the 8:30 service becomes favored by lake visitors in the summertime so they can go on to summer activities after service is over. * Although North Webster United Methodist Church is doing a super job of reaching area residents, Rev. Lindemood strongly feels that there is a mission for the church, and in fact all area churches., to better inform seasonal visitors that the churches are here, available and eager to help fill the spiritual . needs of all, residents and visitors alike. He recognizes that the church needs to serve three different groups of people with equal zeal; full time residents, those here from April through September and those here in June, July and August.

“The church is the common institution that has the welfare of ‘The People’ at heart. Their interests are what we’re about,” states the pastor. “We first need to serve the people who are here year around but we must shift slightly to also serve the visitors in the summertime. ’ ’ “I am frustrated by the fact that the media, including Ft. Wayne and South Bend TV stations, is unaware of the enormous growth in population in this area during the summer months,” he adds. “No one has any idea how many people are here during the summer season.” Rev. Lindemood adds that he is concerned that so many people do not seem to have much interest in the other person. He says the provincialism of our humanity has made us rather stupid. “It’s my dock, my boat, my yard, my sea wall. We must learn to care more for the other person.’’ Hospital Ministry Important High on the list of important duties of Pastor Lindemood is visiting church members who are patients in hospitals or shut-ins. He is accustomed to visits to hospitals in Ft. Wayne, the South

Bend area and even Chicago or Indianapolis when needed. If necessary hospital calls conflict, he does not hesitate to contact the associate pastor, C. Ed McClarnon, or one of the many retired ministers in the area to help make the calls. Other Comments Rev. Lindemood is very pleased and, as he says, “kind of awed” that the church has voted to start a day care center which will initially work with two-year olds and older. He said the church members feel there is an interest and a need for pre-school child care. The center is being modelled after the Syracuse day care center. When asked about the Faith Assembly, Rev. Lindemood’s real caring attitude came out as he said, “I am concerned because I have the feeling that a lot of Faith Assembly people are hurting spiritually.” On the subject of different churches using the terms of debts, trespasses, sins, etc. in The Lord’s Prayer, the pastor said simply that the mother church of his denomination is the Church of England which came from the Catholic Church. Since these used “trespasses” the Methodist Church has seen no reason to change it. He added, with a twinkle in his eye, that trespasses is probably said by the majority since it it also still used by the Catholics, with its enormous following around the world. . Work night held There were 15 members and one guest, Janet Coy, who met for a work night at the Bethel Church, Milford. Connie Smith directed the making of favors for the nursing home and crocheting was done by Vivian Kern. There were two comforters knotted and will be donated to the CROP Friendship Sale to be held in May. - Arlene Cory conducted a short business meeting. She invited those interested in making crafts to be donated to CROP Sale to meet in her home. Members will meet at 7 p.m., February 13, at Lakeland Loving Care Center to deliver favors to the residents. Refreshments were served by Viola Kaiser and Kathy Lechleidner.

The summer missionaries will learn survival skills, washing clothes by hand, bathing from a dish tub, basic construction skills and how to share their faith in Jesus with others. All training will prepare the team members to work both independently and cooperatively with the help of God. In Cyprus the team will work with the Logos School. They will walk where the apostle Paul walked on his first missionary journey when he visited Paphos on the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. They will not only see Paphos but also visit ancient temples and temple ruins. This is an excellent opportunity for Greek scholars to be in a land where modern day Greek is used extensively. On the south shore of Cyprus is the important commercial city of Limassol where the team members can purchase the
