RED CROSS MEETS KIWANIANS — Candace Gaff, left, a tissue bank technician, and Cindi Marsh, field representative, of the American Red Cross Blood Services regional office in Fort Wayne join Lakeland Kiwanis Club president Dean McFadden at a meeting of the North Webster club Monday morning, Dec. 30. The Red Cross representatives presented a program, describing their work, for Kiwanis Club members. The American Red Cross has several specific requirements for blood donors — such as to appear in. good health, be between 17 and 65 years old, al; least 110 pounds, and there must be a lapse of eight weeks between donations. Among other requirements are the exclusion of persons who have had infectious hepatitis, those on diabetes medication, persons with chronic kidney disease, and individuals at high risk for AIDS. Blood donations are postponed in many instances where there has been exposure to certain diseases and infections. The representatives also showed slides and pointed out the procedures followed for skin and organ donations. A Uniform Donor Card was shown for persons desiring to donate organs or tissues at the time of their death. To be effective, this card must be completed and should be carried by the donor. A slide show also explained how skin is taken from a cadaver and stored until it is needed by a person with severe burns.
