James Tranter, representing Ward II on the Syracuse town board was unanimously voted the board’s president at an organizational meeting last night. The vote followed a brief executive session at which Darrell Grisamer, board president for the past two and a half years, told other members he would rather not be president any longer. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hubartt and family and Mrs. Cleo Strieby, all of Syracuse, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. David Strieby of Indianapolis, on Sunday, Dec. 28, for a belated Christmas dinner. Barton Cox was elected president of the Syracuse Town Board at a meeting held Tuesday evening. Three ballots were cast by members of the board to elect the new president. Cox received two votes. The third ballot listed no nomination to the post. Sixty inembers of the Bitner Family met at the home of Mr. and. Mrs. Harold Bitner, near Cromwell for the Christmas dinner and gift exchange New Year’s Day. Mr. and Mrs. Orval Klink left Tuesday for Deerfield Beach, Florida where they plan to spend the next two months. 50 YEARS AGO, JAN. 8,1936 Ice boat enthusiasts of Syracuse and Lake Wawasee for the past several weeks, have been making plans to hold races on Syracuse Lake every Sunday, commencing this coming Sunday at 1 o’clock providing that there is enough wind and the condition of the ice is such as to permit racing. The new town board, consisting of the old board with the exception of one new member, was sworn in by Warren T. Colwell, at the board’s meeting, Tuesday evening. These members are W. G. Connolly, Fielden Sharp and F. M. Grissom. Evelyn Bitner was surprised Sunday morning when she returned home from Sunday school to find her class of six girls already there to help her celebrate her birthday. and family. A good time followed. Evelyn received several nice presents. Twenty members of the family formed the dinner party at the home of Mrs. J. T. Riddle, Sunday, at which the birthdays of three of the party which occur this month were celebrated. Mrs. Herman Clouse and daughter Mary Glass had come from Churubusco, Saturday, and Mrs. Clouse and sons Willis and Ross, and Mrs. Glass joined the party Sunday. Other guests who joined the potluck dinner were: Mr. and Mrs. Will Bushong, Mr. and Mrs. Landis Pressler, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Bushong and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bushong and family. Four generations were represented at the party, six of Mrs. Riddle’s grandchildren and five great-grandchildren being there. When the boxes which had been placed on counters of stores in Syracuse before Christmas, and which had been marked “for the school children’s milk fund” were opened Friday, it was found that $5.16 had been collected in this way. In addition to the money donated by the Red Cross to start this fund in Syracuse, Ralph Thornburg has donated 64, and at the first meeting of the Ladies of the Round Table when a free will offering was asked 61 was obtained. Leonard Barnhart took dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Meek and family, Sunday. Miss Margaret Geisel spent the week end with Mrs. Lloyd Disher.
