St. Martin's named for man from Peru

By GLEN LONG Staff Writer St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church is the church home lor about 250 households in the Syracuse-Wawasee area. The number of worshipers at the church, south of Syracuse on SR 13, increases greatly in the summer months when lake residents and visitors are here. Father Robert Hammond, local pastor, does a fine job of explaining some of the facets of the local church. He has been pastor at the local church since 1980 and come next June will have been a priest for 34 years. He served 28 years in Ft. Wayne, the first 17 years at Central Catholic High School as teacher and principal.

INSIDE CATHOLIC CHURCH — The interior of St. Martin de Porres Church, south of Syracuse, is beautiful, with natural wood and massive laminated rafters. The large window behind the cross lets soft diffused light into the altar area, especially when the sun is shining brightly.

The church was named after Saint Martin de Porres partly because when it was built in 1966 Martin de Porres had just been canonized. The Catholic Church confers sainthood on an individual whose life was so close to the Gospel that it can and should be imitated. This usually occurs between 200 and 300 years after the person’s death. Before being canonized into sainthood the person is judged to be venerable and thenblessed. St. Martin de Porres was bom in Peru, South America, to a black woman who had been a slave and was then married to a Spanish nobleman. The senior de Porres, angered that Martin was bora black, disowned him as his

son. Growing up in a very poor environment, Martin was apprenticed by his mother to a barber. Since barbers of that day dabbled in medicines, Martin gained Icnowledge of helping the sick, bi this environment he discovei*ed he wanted to help the poor and needy people of Peru. Through his association ivith a Peruvian lady, St. Rose of Lima, who also devoted her life to helping the poor, Martin made such contributions in the true spirit of Jesus tliat after his death steps toward his sainthood began. The Local Church The statue of the saint in front of the church wears a white tunic. This signifies his association with the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church, which claimed him because of his good wor ks. St. Martin de Porres Church celebrated Epiphany on Sunday, January 5. Next Sunday will be the celebration of The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Epiphany means in the Greek, “a coming.” It is used to signify “the coming out” of Jesus as he began his ministry on earth. The local church is in the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese. It operates with a parish council of elected members which makes most major policy decisions. Catholic law states that the priest does have the power to veto, but this is not used because Father Hammond believes the members should help direct local church procedures. An inquiry class is offered periodically for people to learn about the Catholic Church when they are anticipating joining the fellowship. Father Hammond considers fellowship to be one of the key words in the church. “It is as important to belong.” he says, “as to believe.” He adds that visitors are always welcome at St. Martins and feels that congregation members will always enjoy greeting new worshipers. Church management includes the off ice of deacon and since the mid 1960 s the Catholic Church has allowed deacons to marry. Father Hammond speaks gently as he discusses children in the church. Even though wee ones sometimes compete for the floor in church, he is thankful they are in attendance. “Children learn their values in the home,” says Father Hammond, “and the home logically includes the church experience. ”

free series will begin at 8 p.m. in Newcomer Center on Jan. 12 and continue Jan. 19 and 26 and Feb. 2. Foster is associate professor of theology and writer in residence at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. In the films, Foster investigates the classic disciplines of Christian spiritual life from four perspectives. “The disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that He can transform us,” Foster says. Each evening will focus on a different kind of discipline. First, Foster shows how classical disciplines set humans free from patterns of sin in “Spiritual Discipline: Door to Liberation.” In “The Inward Disciplines” he explores how meditation, fasting, study and prayer are keys to finding an internal righteousness of the Kingdom of God. “The Outward Disciplines” calls Christians tc discover the social implications of solitude, submission, service and tyFinally, “The Corporate Disciplines” shows that all spiritual discipline; are meant to be experienced in a community. Worship, guidance and celebration lead to a “more intimate walk with God.”
