WASHINGTON, D.C. - The worst indictment of modern-day Major Leaguers isn’t drug use. Nor is it poor fielding and thinking despite grossly-inflated salaries. The worst indictment of today’s players is their lack of sympathy of past big leaguers. Old-time Major League players have only a modest pension. Today’s Major League players earn enormous sums and have a lavish pension plan. Then why can’t they spread a little of today’s television money among needy old-timers? Television money didn’t enrich the pension plan of former Major Leaguers; some today are hard pressed to meet living expenses as a result of sharp inflation. That came to mind recently when friends gathered to help Mike Garcia, 62, who is facing physical and financial hard times. Garcia was one of Cleveland’s big four in the 50’s — the best pitching staff in baseball

What a life! Did you go to bed last night with the snow sifting in through the cracks in your bedroom? Were your feet so cold that you had wrapped fruit jars filled with hot water to keep them warm? Did you awake at night dreading to go down to the outhouse and feel the cold winter wind flinging stinging snow? What a life! Most of us are so rich we don’t even realize it — rich in conveniences, rich in our freedoms.
