Warriors now 4-3
Wawasee defeats Columbia City, Mishawaka
ByDAVESTRAUB Sports Editor Patience can go a long way. The Wawasee basketball team needs it to be successful. Coach John Wysong needed it at the start of this season when his roster was still incomplete. Patience, therefore, has paid off since the Warriors added two non-conference wins to their record, defeating Mishawaka at home Saturday, 63-59 and Columbia City on the road Friday, 54-53. Junior Tim Mangas led Wawasee, now 4-3, with 27 points in its most recent win over the Cavemen, also 4-3. The Warriors were hot from the field, hitting 53 percent while committing just 14 turnovers. Foward Bill Hutchinson played a solid inside game, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Dave Kistler and Jon

Evans each had eight points to round out the Warrior attack. Wawasee Sharp Against Eagles Hutchinson sparked the Warriors with 17 points as Wawasee edged out a 54-53 win over host Columbia City. ‘Turnovers were even, rebounds were even and the shooting was even,” said Wysong after the game. “I felt the difference in this game was the play of Hutchinson. He made the difference for us inside.” This was a well-played game on both sides as Wawasee and Columbia City traded baskets throughout the contest. Leading 14-12 after the first quarter, the Warriors forged a 24-18 advantage halfway through the second period. But the Eagles came back to tie it. Mangas hit a 12-foot jumper with four seconds left in the half to give Wawasee a 30-28 edge. Mangas chipped in 15 points. One factor that stood out in the
first half was that the Warriors committed only one foul. Wawasee was whistled for seven total fouls. ‘‘We were patient and we played smart,” Wysong said. But the Warriors were hard pressed. Columbia City took the lead when Rex Schrader’s jumper made it 36-35 in the third quarter. Ryan Stetzel followed that with a turnaround jumper to give the hosts a three-point advantage. Hutchinson’s bucket tied it at 41 with 12 seconds left in the period. Wawasee broke away in the fourth quarter and grabbed a 54-49 lead in the fading moments. Yet, the Warriors failed to ice the game by missing some clutch free throws while the Eagles narrowed it to 54-53 with buckets by Steve Kreiger and Darren Simmons. It stood that way since a desperation heave by Simmons fell short of the rim at the buzzer.
Simmons led the Eagles with 18 points. Kreiger added 16. Both teams shot well over 50 percent from the floor. Break From The Action Wawasee will return to action in a Jan. 3 match-up at West Noble. The Warriors will then host Carroll in a make-up date the following night. Afterwards, Wawasee will gear up for a Northern Lakes Conference game against Plymouth Jan. 10. It will be a home game. Northridge shocks Lady Warriors
MIDDLEBURY - A sluggish first half cost the Wawasee girls’ basketball team a heavy price as the Lady Warriors were shocked by Northridge last Saturday, 30-27. The loss drops Wawasee’s overall record to 6-3 while the Lady Raiders improved their mark to 5-5. Both teams were plagued by poor overall shooting. Northridge hit only 11 of 28 field goal tries. Wawasee nailed just nine of 38. The Lady Raiders were frigid from the charity stripe, canning eight of 23 attempts. The Lady Warriors swished only nine of 19. Wawasee staged a bold comeback after falling behind in the first half, 18-8. Michelle Harter led all scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Journal-Gazette honors Warriors
