CHRISTMAS IN ST. PETER’S SQUARE — An illuminated creche, flanked by a gaily decorated evergreen from West Germany, greets yuletide visitors to the Vatican. In the background is the Michelangelo-designed dome of the great basilica, where thousands of

Vatican Christmas: A special time of the year

By MERCER CROSS National Geographic News Service By the thousands they stream into St. Peter’s Square, from all parts of the world, eagerly queuing up before the home sanctuary of Roman Catholicism to join in a colorful observance of Christ’s birth. The throngs begin to assemble hours before the mass, celebrated by Pope John Paul 11, begins at midnight on Christmas Eve. Tuxedoed ushers, volunteer “gentlemen of His Holiness,” escort up to 25,000 ticket-holding visitors to their seats in portable chairs arranged around the high altar of the basilica. The gold in the mosaics of the ceilings and the great dome glows in rich splendor under lights turned non for only special occasions. Multicolored flowers add a festive touch to the cavernous baroque structure.

As the Pope mounts the altar, the excited crowd rises and applauds and then grows silent as the service begins. The Vatican choir sings, in Latin, the music of the church. A “people’s choir” sings carols from another part of the basilica, creating a stereophonic effect. The international crowd joins the pontiff both in prayers and songs, following text and music in illustrated booklets distributed at the start of the service. The basilica rings with words and music recited or sung in Italian, English, Latin, German, Polish, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Indian, and Hausa. At the conclusion of the Mass, the Pope takes a carved wooden .statue of the Christ child from before the altar, carries it to a creche in a side chapel and places it in a crib. “Under John Paul 11, There’s a much greater spirit of hospitality at the midnight Mass than in the past.” says Monsignor Thomas

worshipers from around the world attend Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The decorations in the square are innovations of John Paul 11, who has been field, National Geographic Society.)

Banick, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and former vice rector of the Vatican’s North American College. “He has what I would call a populist sensitivity to ordinary persons.” John Paul 11, who is credited by Vatican officials with the increased use of flowers at the Mass, has also left his imprint on other facets of the church’s celebration of Christmas. Starting Christmas Eve, the center of the massive square, near its Egyptian obelisk, is radiant with the lights from a tall evergreen that has been trucked in with fanfare from West Germany. Near the tree is a large creche, also from Germany, occupied by figures of the Holy Family, 11/zl l /z times life-size. delivers a brief Christmas message to the world, bestowing blessings in more than 50 languages. That occasion can attract as many as 100,000 people to the square. The Vatican’s observances begin before Christmas and extend beyond it. A few weeks before Christmas, Pope John Paul 11, in celebration of the Feast of St. Nicholas, blesses the statues of the Christ child that are brought to St. Peter’s Square by thousands of Rome’s children. At the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6, traditionally a day of giftgiving among European Catholics, the pontiff again blesses children and their families in the square. On Christmas Eve 1984, John Paul 11, who is Polish, held an emotional audience for a group of Polish families and their brightly costumed children. A Vatican spokesman says it is not known if the Pope will have a similar audience this year.

been fulfilled. The Lord or Messiah to come had to be virgin bom by the Holy Spirit (Mat. 1:25) for anyone bora of man is a sinner; and He was a Holy God. As the Lamb of God without blemish or spot, He was the perfect sacrifice for sin as He shed His blood on the cross at Calvary.

The prophet Micah (5:2) told that the Messiah would be bora in BethlehemO “But thou, Bethlehem Ephrata, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been of old, from everlasting.” This has been fulfilled in Mat. 2:5-6. Now when Jesus was bora in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod, the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He that is born King of the Jews?” For we have seen His star in the east and are come to worship Him.” (Mat. 2:1-2) This fulfilled the prophecy of Numbers 24:17. King Herod was a wicked man and truly did not want to worship a King nor did he want any competition in that area so he sought to kill all the children under two years old. This was prophesied in Jer. 31:15 but fulfilled in Mat. 2:18. “In Ramah was lamentation and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted because they were not.” Having been warned by an angel of God, Joseph took the child and His mother and fled to Egypt. When King Herod died they returned to Israel. This was prophesied by Hosea 11:1: “Out of Egypt have I called my son,” and the prophesy was fulfilled in Mat. 2:15. They dwelled in the city of Nazareth that Jesus might be called “a Nazarene.” This was prophesied in Isa. 11:1, 53.2 and Ps. 22:6. It was fulfilled in Mat. 2:21-23. The Messiah must be of Abraham’s seed (Gen. 21:12) and according to Mat. 1:1, Jesus Christ is the Son of David and the Son of Abraham and thus is the true Lord and Messiah. His first coming was as a saviour for the world of sinners, but his second coming will be as a King when He sets up His kingdom on earth and reigns on the throne of David. This was prophesied in Isaiah 60:6 and is yet to be fulfilled.
