Wawasee bounces back
in win over Triton
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor After getting whipped by Warsaw last Friday, John Wysong stressed the importance of character. He said his Warriors would need it to beat Triton the following night. For a while, it looked like Wawasee would fail the gut check. But a fourth quarter rally spurred the 2-3 Warriors to a 65-48 win over the visiting Trojans.

The hosts blitzed Triton in the final period by a 22-7 count. Guard Tim Mangas scored 13 of his game-high 29 points in that fourth quarter. Many of those resulted from fastbreak layups. Actually, the game was much closer than the final margin of 17. With about 1:30 left in the contest, the Warriors swished 11 straight points. Before the spurt, Wawasee struggled with its smaller opponent as the Trojans managed to chip away and make it a two-
point game for the most part. Late in the third quarter, Triton tied it when Troy Heisler hit a jumper to make it 39-39. Yet, the period ended when the Warriors converted a fastbreak layup. The Trojans are 0-6. Guard Dave Kistler had another good game as the 5-11 senior scored 15 points. However, Wawasee shot poorly from the free throw line, hitting only five of 12 tries for a frigid 42 percent. The Warriors were much better from the field, nailing 30 of 53 attempts for a 56 percent clip. Warsaw Nightmare “We can play better than this,” said Wysong after Wawasee was thoroughly beaten by the Warsaw Tigers last Friday, 86-57. The loss dropped the Warriors Northern Lakes Conference mark to 0-2. Warsaw Center Rick Fox, who stands 6-7, led the onslaught with a sparkling 34-point performance. He also grabbed 14 rebounds and ignited a noisy Tiger Den crowd with a thundering breakaway dunk early in the second quarter, giving the hosts a convincing 28-12 lead. “They did an outstanding job of using their inside game,” the coach added. “They did a lot of things to hurt us and affect us. They spread our defense out real well and Fox had an outstanding game as a result.” Forwards Sean O’Connor and Brant Bair chipped in 17 and 10 points, respectively. This inside scoring punch paved the way to a cosy 42-29 halftime lead. Tiger Rod Wilson came off the bench and scored 10 points and sparked Warsaw’s big surge in the third quarter as the hosts upped the lead to 59-39. “Our size did intimidate them,” said Tiger Coach Al Rhodes, whose club owns a 3-3 record after Saturday’s 51-44 loss to South Bend Adams. “Not only Fox, but Bair and O’Connor too.” The Warsaw mentor also realized that the Warriors are in a tough transition period and was not surprised that Wawasee lacked its traditional sharpness. “All of their roles are being switched,” he said. “With all of the football players coming back for them, it will take John a while to get things going again.” Mangas led the Warriors with 13 points. Bill Hutchinson added 12. Busy Weekend The Warriors will take on two non-conference opponents this weekend. Friday, it will be a road contest against Columbia City. Then on Saturday night, Wawasee will host Mishawaka. “We got to work on our trade and work it a lot better,” said Wysong after the Warsaw game. You can bet the Warriors will be sharper for these two games. Mangas, a junior, has been a standout so far this season. He averages 20.1 points per game, scoring 29 in two games. Kistler is off to a fine start with a 10.1 average. Wrestlers continue torrid pace
Living up to its state ranking of 12th, the Wawasee wrestling team added two more impressive wins. The Warriors are now 4-0 in dual meets — all of them being Northern Lakes Conference matches.
