CIRCUIT RIDE A SUCCESS — The North Webster United Methodist Church announces the Circuit Ride stewardship program was successful due to a revival of the spirit of pioneer Methodism in the members, according to Helen Hoy, publicity director. . Arden Walgemuth commented “In these times of economic uncertainty, our people showed thdy have a great deal of faith and willingness to share generously what they have.” The Circuit Ride program sparked excitement and enthusiasm among the members who have become 20th century Circuit Riders. Each member who has filled in an Estimate of Giving card will be mailed a letter confirming the estimate and a certificate that recognizes and honors him or her for participation in the stewardship program. Shown in the photo Jack Maul, finance chairman, is handed the last saddle bag of pledges from Jeanette Keim, as Walgemuth holds the completed circuit roster.

By MICHAEL A. GUIDO Last week I visited a friend who was getting up from the floor. “What were you doing?” I asked. “Making pearls,” he answered. You see, when an irritating substance enters the shell of an oyster, the animal covers the irritation with a milky substance called mother-of-pearl. After several years the particle is covered and a beautiful pearl is formed. Are there irritations in your life? Be like my friend, and make a pearl.

Do not pout or pity yourself, pray. The Lord wants us to burden Him with what burdens us. Do not complain or criticize, commit it to the Lord, he is the great Physician. There is no disease He cannotheal, nosinHecannot remove, and no trouble He cannot help. Do not grumble or gripe, give thanks. The Lord is good and He desires your good, and only your good. He is moment by moment making everything work together for your good.

Then the Lord will turn your plan or problem into a pearl. New Testament And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jo’na: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:16-18

New pastor in Leesburg

By GLEN LONG Staff Writer “We are here to serve the Lord because He has called us to be 'here.” This is the statement of Rev. William W. Smith, the new pastor at Grace Brethren Church in Leesburg. Rev. James Boyer resigned as pastor of the church in August, 1985 and Rev. Smith accepted the challenge of filling the pulpit because he was here, available and feels that this is where God wants him to be. “It’s really an honor to be serving the Lord here in Leesburg,” says Smith. “This church has always had a spot of class and I think, with its present 60 members, that it has a good potential for growth in its duty of spreading the gospel. ” His enthusiasm can hardly be contained as Smith beams, “I am so happy the Lord opened up this opportunity right here in an area I love with people I love.” He explains that he has known of Leesburg Grace Brethren Church for several years, since he had worked in the executive offices of the Grace Brethren Home Missions Council in Winona Lake from 1980 to September 1, 1985. He and his wife, at that time began to take some trips, since they both enjoy traveling. Further travel plans were quickly pushed aside as the Leesburg church opportunity was offered. Smith graduated from Grace Theological Seminary in 1952 after having graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1949. He then started having special Bible conferences with business men, a

IF YOU MUST BRAG, BRAG ON THE LORD Notice among yourselves, dear brothers, that few of you who follow Christ have big names or power or wealth. Instead, God has deliberately chosen to use ideas the world considers fqolish and of little worth in order to shame those people considered by the world as wise and great. He has chosen a plan despised by the world, counted as nothing at all, and used it to bring down to nothing those the world considers great. So that no one anywhere can ever brag in the presence of God. For it is from God alone that you have your life through Christ Jesus. He showed us God’s plan of salvation; He was the one who made us acceptable to God; He made us pure and holy and gave Himself to purchase our salvation. As it says in the Scriptures, “If anyone is going to boast, let him boast only of what the Lord has done.”

REV. WILLIAM W. SMITH ministry which lasted for 20 years. To help finance that ministry, he bought 20 acres of land east of Winona Lake and built Merrywood Mobile Home Park, which he managed for 20 years. He and his wife, Phyllis, met in Whittier, Calif., in 1954 and were married in 1955. They have a daughter, Sherilyn Rank, who is a Grace College graduate and a son, Jim, who is employed at Othy Inc. in Warsaw. His apparent love of people and outgoing personality will stand Rev. Smith in good stead as he ministers to the church needs of his friends in Leesburg. He says, “We always have room for one more worshiper."
