North Webster boat racer to be inducted into 'Hall'
North Webster resident Gary Miller will be inducted into American Power Boat Association’s (APBA) Hall of Champions during a ceremony at St. Petersburg, Fla., on Feb. 8. The Hall of Champions is the highest honor a boat racer can receive, with the American Power Boat Association selecting inductees on the basis of their accomplishments during a racing season. “I’m pretty proud, it’s an elite group of men who make it to the Hall of Champions,” commented Miller, who has been racing competitively since 1954. Miller finished well ahead of the competition this year by capturing first-place in point totals in the nation for “C” modified runabout, “D” modified runabout, and two-person runabout classes. Points are accumulated throughout the season, which runs from May until September, and the top point man is awarded the title of US-1; a title which was bestowed upon Miller for the first time in his career. Miller, who owns his own boats, also owns and operates The Carriage Shop in North Webster, which keeps him busy when he isn’t racing. “My father was a boat racer and started me in the sport when I was nine-years old,” Miller, who mainly races as a “hobby,” remarked.
