Pictured in front of the tree are Jaime Egolf, Chandra Kelly, Joel Wahl, Patrick Tracey, and Shannon Willis. (Photo by Leslie Miller) jMh C ■Bn ' *' . K . Suddenly, two outlaws burst into the schoolhouse to take refuge. The outlaws* plan to escape on the next freight train was foiled when the children involved them in a spelling bee. The brave and clever teacher, Miss Louisa, sent a secret signal to the sheriff, who arrived promptly and arrested the outwitted bad men. Mrs. Mahnensmith’s third grade reading class at Syracuse Elementary gave the play "Miss Louisa And The Outlaws” for the other third graders on Thursday, Dec. 12. Pictured are several of the cast members in the play. Miss Louisa, standing in front, is played by Sarah Detwiler. Playing the outlaws are, in front, Brian Schwartz as Benny the Bad; and Gerric Walker as Dirty Dan. Those seated as classroom students are Paula Lovellette, David Howell, and Dusty Dumthan. In the back row are Frank Slabaugh, Shawn McCallister, and Roxy Erb. Experiencing a mock trial

The eighth grade class from Syracuse Middle School visited the Kosciusko County Courthouse and Jail on Wednesday, Nov. 27. A highlight of the trip was experienced when students became judge, jury, prosecuting attorney, lawyers, and defendant in a mock trial. Acting out parts gave students a better idea of the court process than can be learned in lectures and books. Judge Brunner came to the new court room and answered questions concerning the judicial system. In the jail a tour was conducted showing the security devices, cells, recreation area and kitchen facilities to the students.

Another high point came when the students talked with an inmate who warned against stealing and taking drugs and adivsed the students to never start breaking laws as the best prevention for a life of crime. '• Students toured the old courthouse, learning that it was originally heated by fireplaces. Crossing through the tunnel they viewed the fantastic glass mural in the new court building with its scene of farms and lakes and varied life in our country. The trip was organized by Mrs. Arlene Corson and Mr. Leroy Rapp, health teachers at the Syracuse school, after an invitation by Mr. Tom Kitch, Kosciusko County detective.
