By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor After losing two tough road games, the Wawasee girls’ basketball team needed a boost. They got it last Saturday afternoon by beating Mishawaka at home, 62-55. Yet, Wawasee faced its toughest opponent to date with more poise and skill. “I’m much encouraged with what happened today,” said Head Coach Dale Brannock. “They’re coming on a little.” Wawasee came on strong in the first half, posting a 29-19 advan- / J

tage. The Lady Warriors quickly established a strong inside game as Center Lori Galloway hurt Mishawaka with numerous baskets inside the 10-foot range. Michelle Harter was also successful under the hoop. “Ironically, this is the best ball club we faced,” said Brannock. “Today, we were more consistent. We didn’t have any long lapses.” The Cavewomen could get not closer than six points in the second half as the Lady Warriors answered with transition buckets by Galloway as well as some timely outside shooting Traci Ostendorf, Becca Stiver and Harter. Galloway led Wawasee in Scoring with 21 points. Harter

followed with 14. “We panicked in certain situations,” said Brannock when asked about Mishawaka’s pressuring defense in the second half. “But we had different players in there at different times and they react differently.” Mishawaka was paced with a brilliant effort by Shelly Johnson, who led all scorers with 23 points. Julie Seltzer sparked the Cavewomen in the second half as she came off the bench to score eight points. Several of her baskets narrowed the gap to six points, but the visitors couldn’t penetrate the lead further than that. Stiver, however, penetrated successfully with some crisp passes to Galloway. She also scored nine points and had the same number of rebounds. Harter claimed 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Warriors. “Becca has good eyes,” praised Brannock. “She does good work but she can’t do it all. That’s why we need to get another guard so some of the pressure is taken off her.” Now that the season is well under way, this Lady Warrior team is starting to find itself, according to the boss. “Early, this team had an identity crisis. Now, it’s starting to go away. But whenever you follow an extremely successful team, there’s going to be that kind of thing. This is this year’s team, and we’re going to be good.” Wawasee Whips Elkhart Central The Lady Warriors upped their season record to 4-2 with an impressive 67-37 romp over Elkhart Central Monday night. It was Wawasee’s first road win of the campaign — something that was important for the young club to achieve. Harter and Galloway each
