Warsaw next game—

Concord beats Wawasee, 56-46 in home opener

By DAVESTRAUB Sports Editor With visions of an upset over Concord, Wawasee ran into an obstacle called the third quarter drought. It was enough for the visiting Minutemen to manage a 56-46 win over the Warriors in last Friday’s season home-opening basketball game. The triumph upped Concord’s record to 3-0 (2-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference) , while Wawasee slipped to 1-1, losing its NLC opener. After building a halftime lead of 32-27, the Warrior offense went in reverse and did not score a field goal in the remaining 14 minutes of the contest. During that time, the Minutemen deliberately chipped away and forged a 46-39 advantage when A

the third quarter ended, “We were hitting the first half, that was the difference,” said Wawasee Boss John Wysong. “In the second half, it seemed to me that we needed more teamwork. Somehow, we’ve got to learn to increase that.” There was plenty of teamwork in the first half. The aggressive Warriors pleased a noisy home crowd with some good outside shooting by Guard Tim Mangas as well as forwards Jon Evans and Bill Hutchinson. Wawasee posted a 16-15 lead after the first quarter. “Their inside game kind of wears you out,” said Wysong, noting that 6-9 Sophomore Forward Shawn Kemp is an effective player when he doesn’t score. “The problems he creates are

unbelievable. He clogs up the middle and he picks up the other players. We just tried to keep him from free-wheeling all night,” he added. Wawasee was successful in doing that, but had to sag to to three players on Kemp much of the night. This eventually created storing chances for other Concord players. Kemp canned 18 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds. Teammate Dwayne O’Connor added 15 tallies. “Their guards (Randy Nisen and Dymon Farrer) are also clever,” said Wysong. “They do so many things to hurt you.” However, Mangas continued to hurt the Minutemen with his penetrating moves and outside shooting in the second quarter, where the 5-11 junior canned six

of his game-high 19 points. His driving layup with 55 seconds left in the half gave the Warriors a 32-27 edge. Then Concord came out and swished 13 unanswered points following intermission and outscored Wawasee, 19-7 in that deadly third quarter. Four Warrior free throws narrowed the margin to 46-43, but the Minutemen converted on a few layups and relied on some clutch charity tosses to secure the victory. “What pleased me more than anything about this game was our hustle,” said Wysong. “We played hard, and maybe that could have cost us in terms of intensity. Our intensity level in the first half may have been just a bit too high and we began to lose some of our concentration in the second half.” What also pleased Wysong was the play of Hutchinson, who scored 11 points and pulled down four rebounds. “He and Mangas had exceptional games tonight,” the coach said. Grapplers defy rankings, defeat Goshen, 30-20

To show that rankings mean little, Wawasee Wrestling Coach Rich Welborn wasn’t surprised when his Warriors beat Goshen, 30-20 in last night’s meet at Wawasee. “All I really have to say is that we have a long way to go,” Welborn said. "I have football players who are out of shape as well as up to seven kids who are hurting. We got to get a lot better.” Wait a minute. Wawasee just won a big match against its toughest conference foe. But if you did not see the score and talked with Welborn, you would think the Warriors lost. Between the lines, the coach is saying Warsaw game tickets on sale Friday Wawasee High School has been given 266 tickets for Friday’s basketball game at Warsaw. Therefore, the tickets will be distributed in the following manner. Player’s parents and students may purchase tickets Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon. Then green and gold and season ticket holders may purchase them from noon to 3 p.m. The tickets will be on side to these at the athletic office. The cost is $2.50. In addition, anyone wishing to help purchase state runner-up rings for the Wawasee football team may do so by mailing the contributions to the Wawasee High School athletic department.

Wawasee has tremendous potential and should enjoy an outstanding year. Things did not start that way last night when Goshen posted wins in the first two weight classes to claim a 9-0 lead. But Eliseo Roa (112), Jeff Dunithan (119) and Bob Doerr (126) collected wins in their respective matches to give the Warriors a 12-9 edge. After a tie and two losses in the next three classes, Wawasee took four of the last five matches to secure the win. Brad Traviolia started the surge with a 17-4 win over Trent Fry. Lance Lantz (167) followed with a thrilling come-from-behind victory, beating Mike Whittrig, 8-6. Then Don Kauffman (177) beat Harold Schmucker, 9-4. Following Scott Shoemaker’s tough 5-4 loss to Keith Conder in the 185 pound class, Steve Sturgill iced the win with an impressive 9-1 showing against Ron Telschow. Warsaw, which is 2-2 for the year. The Tigers recently beat Goshen in an NLC contest, 63-53. In addition, Warsaw features two great scoring weapons — 6-8 Rick Fox and Brant Bair. Fox scored 26 points against Goshen while Bair added 14. But that’s just the statistical line. The intangible is obvious to northeast Indiana basketball fans since the Tiger Den, Warsaw’s home court, is one of the toughest places to play for any team. One thing is certain: Wysong will have Wawasee ready. This is a team that will win its share of games. Shades of that were evident last Friday. JV game starts at 6:15 p.m.
