The Never-Die Settlement
By M. LYNN GRAY Guest Feature Writer Okay, you’ve been watching television long enough for today and the laundry is in the dryer. There are no immediate household emergencies to divert your attention for the time being. So, what do you do with your spare time? Sit back in a comfortable chair, prop your feet up if you want, and follow me down a dirt and grass path that runs along a singing, sparkling channel of water flowing out of Webster Lake. The grass and weeds are starting to turn brown and dry. Yellow, red, and orange leaves float through the cool, crisp autumn air to land in the water and are transported in swirls of motion to points downstream. The year is 1879 and we have come to Boydston Mills to meet some of the area folk, pass along neighborly gossip, and learn something of Tippecanoe Township’s earlier area of settlement. Ephraim Muirheid (Morehead) from Virginia built the first cabin at the outlet of Boydston (Webster) Lake in the winter of 1834-35. A relative, Benjamin Johnson, soon built a cabin near by and more were to follow over the next few years. Ephraim purchased land and constructed a sawmill and dam in 1836. The dam raised the levels of three small lakes to form one large lake, Boydston as it came to be called in later years. In 1837, the grist mill was built, which is still in use in 1879. Ephraim and Miriam Muirheid sold mills, land, and dam to Thomas Boydston in 1846. In 1851, Thomas suffered gold fever and made the trip to California. On his return to Indiana in 1853, he found the mill had burnt to the ground. To balance the disaster, Benjamin Yohn, in whom he’d entrusted the running of the mill, had married his daughter, Elizebeth. Thomas rebuilt in 1856 and installed Ben

as the mill’s operator. Benjamin had arrived in the area in 1833. Look who’s coming down the path, it’s Adam See, the blacksmith. Ben must have a horse with a loose shoe or needs repairing in the mill. Either way, Adam should , ask a good payment, as he had to come down the Huntington-White Pigeon from the other side of Webster. There goes Abram Goble with another load of sorghum. Old Abe retired from farming some time back, but you just can’t stop him. He must be taking his crop over to Fredrick Black’s Sorghum Mill near the Backwaters. I’ll bet Henry Strombeck is going to throw a big thrashing party tonight because there goes John Mock with his machine. Henry came from Germany in 1858 and still has a heavy accent but he sure throws a good thrashing gettogether! I see a couple of the area children skulking about the mill. The Warner school house, started in the winter of 1838-39, is either closed for the day or those two boys are just skipping lessons to do some fishing in the mill race. Look who’s leaning against the mill, it’s Doc Ogle. Let’s go over and have a word with him. “Mornin’ Doc. What brings you out from Webster this morning?” “What’s that? Oh, excuse me, I was lost in thought. Just stopped over at Ben Yohn’s post office to see if I’d received word from my family back in Pennsylvania.” “I hope any news was of good nature.” "Well, I really couldn't tell you. Ben was busy helping Mrs. Miller choose some ribbon from his new stock and asked me to come back. It was probably easier to get mail out of the old flour barrel when Tom Boydston started as postmaster in 1848. Not so crowded.” “Didn’t I hear that Mr. Carpenter was ailing? ” “Yes, he was taken ill yesterday. It’s sort of ironic, reallv. mv

profession is prolonging life. As undertaker, Daniel takes care of those I am unable to aid. We constitute a partnership that most folks don’t even associate.” Seeing that Doc is once against lost in thought, we move on. ? Ah, here comes someone out the front door of the mill. It must be another of the delinquent scholars. No, this figure seems familiar. I think I know this youngster ... Yes, it’s a youthful Greg Smith of North Webster and we have stepped up a few years into the present century and it’s the autumn of 1946. Greg and his family have lived at and operated the North Webster Milling Company since May 1941. Greg’s grandfather, Howard S. Smith, bought the business from a Mrs. Odonald, who, with the aid of a mill hand named Mr. King, had been operating the mill and a boarding house in her home, which was the original mill owners’ residence. Greg’s father, Raymond C., and uncle, Floyd W., joined the partnership and the company produces Golden Anchor Flour, Pluto Flour, Wholesome Pancake Flour and Meal, as well as other saleable items. The mill is much the same as earlier in history, only growing more vulnerable with age. Built on stone foundations into the bank of the man-made channel, the four-story, clapboard covered wooden-framed structure looms over the smaller building that straddles the channel. This small building is where the three water-powered turbines, capable of 15, 25, and 45 horsepower, are entrenched. We can hear the water rushing through the flume that causes the turbines, which are of the horizontal style, to generate energy via a shaft and hardwood cogged gears, to the interior of the mill, where different machines are activated with the aid of belts and pulleys attached to the turbine shaft. Greg has come out of the mill to take a break from one of the chores assigned to him. Today it was his duty to station himself in the hot, dusty top floor to keep the grain shoveled away from the star opening as the wheat was augered from the grain pit on the basement level of the mill. Workers, in addition to Greg, consist of two or three area children, his father and mother, two flour millers, Mr. King, and Henry Willis. One truck driver is also employed. The mill’s operation keeps these folks busy 24 hours per day when the water supply out of Webster Lake is at its best. In mid-summer, the flow of water from the lake isn’t sufficient to run the turbines properly and an auxiliary power source is used. The large Rumely Oil Pull Diesel is housed in a small

building on the bank next to the mill and can be used in the wintertime to power the mill when everything is frozen over. The Smith family sold the business in 1947 to the Long brothers and moved on to Leesburg to own and operate the grain elevator. Disaster struck the business in 1949 when the old Boydston Mill perished in flames. It’s autumn 1985 and the path and channel are still much as they were years ago. The mill, flume house, and diesel engine shed are all gone; only foundation walls remain. The race is no longer lined with railroad ties and the water no longer surges through the headrace to power the turbines and then spill into the tail race. The miller’s house is in sad disrepair, having recently suffered the destruction of flames that took the business end of the operation years ago. The dam and upper flume gates, rebuilt and maintained, are doing their job as well as they always have. Legend tells us of a young lady of the settlement who died before she could give her hand in marriage. For many years, even into old age, the young lady’s intended would make the trip to her gravesite to leave flowers and talk with his beloved. Boydston Cemetery still exists among walnut, mulberry, and wild cherry trees in a well-kept lawn. Five marked burial sites are still legible and proclaim that Thomas Boydston, age 54, daughter, Josephine, age 29, Mary Jane, age six, Ambrose, age 18, and George, age 18, are buried here. Thomas’ wife, Jane, moved to Pasadena, Calif., and lived to the age of 94. Other gravesites are in the vicinity but no longer marked. A housing development located just over the hill from the original mill site proudly bears the Boydston name. The Warner school house has been renovated and can still be seen as the little white one room school house at Clarksville. Boydston Mill no longer exists except in the memories of the area folk who keep the township’s first settled area alive in their hearts and stories. All characters and the profession they employ in this article are irctual history based on information from the 1879 Kosciusko County Atlas. Other information is gleaned from interviews with the Smith family of North Webster and the aid of Becki Rhodes of Boydston Estates and Ledru Gray of North Webster. Photo, compliments of Virginia Perry of Epworth Forest, shows Boydston Mill as it appeared prior tojts demise.

Plan to organize
By STEVE ELLINGSON Guest Writer Many of your aren’t old enough to remember Fibber McGee and Molly’s infamous closet. We all try to cram too much into closets with one pole and one top shelf (the standard closet arrangement in most homes). The result is the same...use of only half the available space with resulting clutter. Our closet organizer plan contains ideas for maximum utilization of every closet’s potential. The key is the moveable unit pictured in the center of this closet. We show you how to build this project and then move it into your closet. You can center it as shown and then cut the connecting poles and shelves to fit. Or you can move it against the wall and have one or two rows of poles running from it to the other wall. And here’s a bonus: you can take it with you when you move. Now you’ll always have a place for everything and everything in its place. To obtain our moveable closet organizer plan #743, send $3.95.
