Seeds from the sewer
An old violin maker took his apprentice into a forest to cut wood for some instruments. He passed the tall trees of the valley and chopped down the gnarled trees of the mountain. “Why?” asked the boy. “The wood of the sheltered trees will break under pressure,” said the old man. “But the trees beaten by the winds produce the best wood and they make the sweetest music.” Have you wondered why you have been buffeted by bereavement, pounded by pain and thrashed by trials? God may have permitted that pressure to

be Buddhist leaders Masao Abe, Jeffery Hopkins and David J. Kalupahana. Christian theologians attending will include John B. Cobb Jr., Hans Kung, James H. Cone, Langdon Gilkey, John Hick, Gordon Kaufman, Schubert Ogden, Rosemary Radford Ruether and David Tracy. “Christians and Buddhists have often lived in two different worlds. The goal of this encounter is in part to build bridges of mutual understanding between two traditions and to foster better communication and cooperation in the future,” Mitchell observed. Mitchell noted that while such encounters have taken place between individuals and in small groups in Asia, “this is the first time in history that so many important leaders of the two religions have attempted to meet in North America. Therefore, these North American encounters have great historical significance.” “Arnold Toynbee predicted that when future historians look at our century, they will be primarily interested in the EastWest encounter of Buddhism and Christianity and its impact on world civilization in the next century.” he observed. Mitchell said some Christian theologians even expect Buddhism to have an impact on contemporary Christianity similar in magnitude to that of Greek philosophy on early Christianity and the rise of science in more recent centuries. The first two encounters were in Hawaii in 1984 and in Vancouver in 1985. Each encounter is organized around a topic. Papers are circulated prior to the event and two formal responses are made to each paper in order to ensure maximum discussion. Authors respond to the replies, followed by a general group discussion. While the sessions are conducted by participants alone, they are open to observation by the public, Mitchell noted. Along with the formal sessions of the encounter, participants part in a number of activities in the community. these include visiting classes, giving interviews to media representatives, preaching in local churches and giving public lectures in the evenings. Details are available from Donald Mitchell, Department of Philosophy, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. 47907. The telephone number is 317-494-4276.

SPEAKS ON HAITI — Catherine Froh, a retired missionary from Pierceton, entertained the United Methodist Women Thursday evening, Dec. 5, during their Christmas party. Tells of life in Haiti
By LINDA MUSSELMAN Staff Writer The United Methodist Women held their annual Christmas party at the church on Thursday evening, Dec. 5. At this time secret prayer partner pals were revealed and new ones drawn for next year. Nancy Newcomer, president, welcomed everyone. Berniece Arhns accompanied on the piano while everyone sang “In Christ There Is No East Or West.” Devotions were by Vi Miller on “Until Christmas Comes” and a story based on “The Hopes and Fears of all the Years.” Lora Buhrt introduced the speaker for the evening. Catherine Froh, a retired missionary, gave a talk on Haiti explaining the country’s poor living and economical conditions, Haiti is about one-third the size of Indiana with approximately 6,000,000 people. Births and deaths are not recorded so an accurate population count can not be given. The people are Satan worshipers and into black voodoo. They are 90 percent Catholic, 10 percent Protestant, and 100 percent voodoo. The

drinking water is used for washing clothes, bathing, drinking, and for watering animals, all from the same stream. Originally from Pierceton, Miss Froh now resides at Greencroft in Qoshen. After her informative and sometimes amusing biography, Della Baumgartner showed slides of Haiti that she and her husband took after spending a vacation there two years ago. The church was decorated in a Haiti theme and refreshments coincided with the poor food conditions of the country. Serving on the decoration committee for the evening were Bernice Longfellow, chairman, Berniece Arhns, Jean Purcell, Marie Stephenson, and Lora Buhrt. On the refreshment committee, Lora Buhrt served as chairman with Pam Unruh, Beverly Flannery, Nilah Brown, Linda Musselman, Ann Dahlstrom, and Rowena Gerencser helping.
