End season 9-5 Warriors bow to Roncalli
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor If justice were the theme of the script, Wawasee’s Cinderella football season would have ended much better. But size and talent mercilessly dictated the final act as Indianapolis Roncalli blew past the Warriors, 37-3 in the Class AAA state title game Friday at the Hoosier Dome. ' “Our kids just did an outstanding job,” said Roncalli Coach Bill Kuntz, perhaps feeling great satisfaction since the Rebels lost a heartbreaking title game to BishopDwenger (Fort Wayne) in 1983,22-21. There was also satisfaction for Wawasee Coach Myron Dickerson. He admitted defeat to the better team, but never sold his own club short. “I think Roncalli deserves to be number one,” he said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that they were the better team out there today. But a few weeks ago, nobody thought we would be here. We deserved to be here. And we beat some very good teams to get here today,” Dickerson added. Once 1-4 in mid-season, the Warriors put it together with a 7-6 win over arch-rival Warsaw. Other victories followed. Then came a difficult playoff schedule. Wawasee prevailed to everyone’s surprise. Prevailing over the powerful Rebels (13-1) was a different matter. Roncalli registered the first score of the game with a safety. This resulted when Dan Finlinson nailed a coffin-corner kick which was downed at the Warrior one yard line. On the next play, Ron Gerber was tackled in the endzone. Later in the first quarter, the Rebels assembled a 47-yard scoring drive in six plays — capped off by Joe Gillum’s 19-yard touchdown run. Eric Schott kicked the extra point. Gillum sparkl-

ed, rushing for 201 yards and scoring three touchdowns. The senior halfback completed the season with 2,149 yards and 31 touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. “The line just blew holes wide open all day,” said Gillum, who carried the ball 25 times. Wawasee managed to cut into the 9-0 lead in the second quarter with 32-yard field goal by Bruce Jackson. This followed a 16-play, 56-yard drive. Before the score, the Warriors came close to posting a touchdowfi when Nathan Rhoades made a diving catch of a Brad Traviolia pass in the endzone. The junior flanker was ruled out of bounds, however. By halftime, Roncalli upped its lead to 16-3 when Gillum rambled 20 yards for his second score of the night. The Rebels took totalcontrol in the second half when Gillum posted his final touchdown run with a brilliant 13-yard effort. Later, Quarterback Joe Kuntz threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Ron Roembke. Finlinson added a one-yard touchdown run in the final quarter. In all, the Rebels scored on five straight possessions. McDowell Hurt Early Scott McDowell’s contributions to the Wawasee offense were timely and crucial. But the junior halfback and defensive tackle could not make his presence felt enough since he ran his hand into the artificial turf. This resulted in a slicing cut across the palm, and McDowell’s hand had to be taped up. He played defense, but Dickerson decided to leave him out of any offensive plans. “We couldn’t take a chance that he wouldn’t be able to hold onto the ball,” the coach said. Gerber picked up some of the slack, rushing for 65 yards on 13 carries. Wawasee had 73 yards on

the ground. Traviolia completed eight of 19 passes for 76 yards. The 6-2 senior actually threw better than that since his receivers dropped five passes early in the contest. Roncalli Ties Record As proof to the Rebels’ power, they racked up 373 total yards in Friday’s title game, tying a state mark. This came against a tough Warrior defense that allowed only 27 points in the previous five games. Kuntz respected that, too. “I see great things ahead for Wawasee,” said Kuntz. “I don’t like to make predictions, but I want to predict that Wawasee will be back here next year.” Roncalli also had 115 yards passing, as Kuntz (Joe, the

coach’s younger brother) completed seven of nine attempts. “If you can’t stop what a team does best, you’re in big trouble,” said Dickerson. “But I want to emphasize that my team accomplished a lot of good things. These young men gave up a lot and held together like a family.” Golf player and coach honored The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette recently named Beckie Welty to its all-area golf team. The Wawasee High School senior was one of five players chosen on the select squad. Welty was Wawasee’s number one golfer for four years and finished eighth at the state meet this year. She was also top medalist at the sectional and had an 18-hole average of 86. In addition, the JournalGazette named Rudy Cesco golf coach of the year for guiding the Lady Warriors to a sixth place showing at the state meet. Cesco also coached Wawasee to a 10-6 regular season record. Wawasee’s number two golfer, Heidi Musser, was an honorable mention selection.
