Balance spurs Wawasee swimmers
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor If there were ever similarities in the same program, Wawasee Swim Coach Tim Caldwell could write a book on the subject. He could call it the book of balance. “Total team depth is the key,” he stressed while assessing the 1985-86 boys’ swim team. “That’s our strength.’’ Just like the girls, balance will spell success for the boys. So will numbers. Caldwell presently has 22 members, of whom seven are returning lettermen. Those seven include Steve Rozow (freestyle and backstroke); Brent Atwood (distance freestyle and individual medley); David Gilson

In addition, Caldwell welcomes one of his biggest freshmen classes in years, contributing depth and youth to a team that sported a 10-4-1 record last year. Os the eight freshmen, four have age group swimming experience. “It’s great when you have a lot of freshmen with an experienced team,” Caldwell said. “But it could be the opposite when you have no experience. ’ * Nevertheless, Wawasee should enjoy a good s'eason with its material. And Caldwell always gets the most out of his athletes. “The way I look at the swim-
mers, we could be good,” he said. “Or we could be very good, or we could be tremendous. If we’re willing to make the effort, we could be tremendous, because the potential is there. But, we’ll at least be good.” That means the Warriors could duplicate their second place finish in the Northern Lakes Conference as well as in sectional competition. First place could even be a realistic goal. “We can

and Gary Stuckman. Presently, the Warriors stand with a 1-1 record, beating Huntington North in . their seasonopening meet, 93-79. LaPorte handed Wawasee a 110-61 defeat, but Caldwell hopes the Warriors will bounce back in tomorrow’s home meet against East Noble, starting at 6:30. Then on Saturday, Wawasee will compete in the Goshen Relays. Races begin at 2 p.m.
