It happened . . . in Milford
1® YEARS AGO. DEC. 3,1975 The family of J.L. (Lloyd) Dewart of Milford got together for a Thanksgiving reunion in the Milford fire station on Thursday. There were 43 people attending the dinner which is to be an annual event. Milford’s Silver Thimble club members enjoyed their Christmas party Monday evening in the Milford Apostolic Christian Church fellowship hall. The hostesses for the evening, Mrs.
Take note ACLU
By EDWIN FEULNER The American Civil Liberties Union is one of the organizations in the United States that conservatives most love to hate. And with good reason. During the Vietnam War, while “Hanoi Jane” Fonda was peddling propaganda for the Communist North — those great civil libertarians who after the fall of Saigon protected the rights of the South Vietnamese by sending them to “reduction” camps or driving them into the sea — the ACLU was aiding the war effort by defending U.S. draft-dodgers and flagburners. Today, its way on America can be seen in the crime statistics. More than most, the ACLU is responsible for our Catch-22 criminal justice system — which treats victims like criminals, and robbers, muggers, and rapists as if they were the ones who had been wronged. Add this to the ACLU’s selfrighteous defense of U.S. Nazis and Communists and one begins to understand why the organization’s name leaves such a bad taste in so many mouths. Much has been written, of course, about the ACLU’s shortcomings. And certainly the story

Kellie England, Syracuse, has branched off into a new line of business, the restaurant business. England and his wife, Doris, purchased Hepler’s Bakery and Deli, Syracuse, from Carl Hepler. England and his wife officially took over the restaurant on Friday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. and changed the name to England’s Family Restaurant. England, who still owns Wawasee Motors, stated the car business is getting tough and he will be going to the wholesale part of the business in addition to operating England’s Family Restaurant. He stated h’s wife has a lot of experience in this area. Currently nothing has changed at the restaurant, except its name. Daily specials will still be Area realtors purchase sign In a plan designed to eliminate duplication, six area realtors have purchased one uniform directional sign for use in the area. In the past, there had frequently been several different realtor signs on one corner. Participating realtors are Beer Realty, Century 21 Beaty Realty, Logan-Rogers Realty, Miller Brothers Realty, Todd Realty, and Wawasee Realty. <

is not over. The national ACLU and its affiliated foundation perk along on a $lO-million-a-year-plus budget; the state affiliates amass more, and the assault on common sense continues. But why? The answer, I think, can be found between the lines of a new report from the Center for Responsible Citizenship, an affiliate of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The report deals with a concept that has all but been forgotten by contemporary society: civil responsibilities. The problem with the ACLU is that somewhere along the way, as it pushed the Constitution past the point of license — different strokes for different folks; if it feels good, do it; and the like — it lost sight of the fact that freedom carries with it a price-tag. Namely, personal civic responsibility. The Founding Fathers, of course, came from a different historical perspective. That is why our individual rights are so clearly and properly codified in the Bill of Rights. Unfortunately, the Founding Fathers did not consider it necessary to spell out what they felt was given: the responsibilities of citizenship. So for two-hundred years we have mov-
available with a wide variety of food. There are some special changes which will take place in the future and will be introduced at the restaurant’s grand opening down the road. Helping the needy Scoutmaster Terry Thompson and assistant Sscoutmaster Randy Veach announced this week that the Milford Boy Scouts are assisting the local Kiwanis Club and Jaycees in their efforts to help the needy this year at Christmas. The Kiwanis are collecting food, while the Jaycees are collecting toys for needy children. Deadlines for pick-up by the Scouts is Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 21, respectively. If you would like the Scouts to pick-up your donations call 658-9143 or 658-4475. Troups have guest Mr. and Mrs. Dean Troup, r 1, Milford, had Mrs. Troup’s nephew, Hans Theo Kreusser of Munich, Germany, as their guest last week. Kreusser spent two weeks vacationing in Florida and visited the Troups before returning to Germany. In May, 1985, he enjoyed a vacation of traveling in Mexico.

ed to an increasingly literal interpretation of the Bill of Rights — while drifting further and further away from any sense of social responsibility. The Center for Responsible Citizenship is trying to fill that void. They commissioned a team of leading scholars — headed by Dr. Mark Cannon, administrative assistant to Chief Justice Warren Burger, and Federal Appeals Court Judge Antonin Scalia, one of the country’s leading jurists — to draft what the center calls a “Bill of Responsibilities,” a document that should be required reading for anyone who has ever worked for or with, or donated money to the ACLU. Lesson one: we must “be fully responsible for our own actions and for the consequences of these actions. Freedom to choose carries with it the responsibility for our choice.” Take note ACLU. Sure we must do what we can to see that everyone charged with a crime gets a fair trial. But we must also see that criminals pay for their actions. Letting confessed criminals off on legal technicalities, a logic pushed to absurdity by the ACLU, is a perversion of our Constitution and shouldn’t be tolerated in a free society.
