■PHHHHHHHMHH' AVID RACER — Drag Racer Tom Brown sits in his jet car, “California Flame” last Friday after speaking to a Wawasee High School auto mechanics class. After classroom discussion, he took the group in the garage area to show off his tool of the trade. (Photo by Dave Straub)

Brown is obsessed with drag racing

By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor Every time Tom Brown steps into his jet drag racing car, he doesn’t know if he will get out in one piece. Brown continues racing anyway. And he tried explaining why to a Wawasee High School auto mechanics class last Friday. “It’s been an obsession with me,” said Brown, a native of the Elkhart area. “Racing has kept me busy and out of trouble and putting the risks of it aside, it’s been a pretty good life.” It’s also a dangerous one. Brown has raced for 21 years, of which 11 were with jet cars. "You can reach speeds of 300 miles per hour for a quarter mile race," said Brown. “And the race is over in about six seconds, so you gotta be ready once you’re strapped in.” This, was demonstrated by a /ideo tape from one of Brown’s races. He then handed out an information packet describing the make-up of such a vehicle. A jet drag car comes equipped with a high thrust, lightweight turbojet engine with three main bearings and an eight stage axial flow compressor coupled directly to a two-stage turbine. The engine also comes with an afterburner. Brown nicknames his jet car the “California Flame.”

“About 25 gallons of fuel are consumed for every race,” said Brown. “It takes a lot of fuel to get started and reach the speeds you want to reach. It’s really kind of weird and I just can’t tell you why I keep racing. I guess I’ll never stop.” Even the knowledge of other racers dying from crashes and explosions does not affect Brown. He fully realizes the hazardous consequences, but goes into every race with confidence. “Some guys get literally killed in the car,” he explained. “That comes from the high speeds, which can shake and vibrate the head so much that it affects the brain? Yet, Brown has not escaped injury. He recalled a major scare that almost resulted in death. “1 once crashed at 267 m.p.h. and I’m still here doing the same thing I did before I crashed. I really don’t know why either. I don’t know any other way to live. This is my life,” he said. Thus, Brown advised the students to get into this type of work while they’re young since it requires a rare brand Os committment. “When I was young,. I always went home and worked on my car,” he said. Brown was Canadian Jet Car champion in 1982 and has raced all over the country.
