It happened ... in Milford

10 YEARS AGO, NOV. 12,1975 Mr. and Mrs. Steve Bomman and children, Candace, Chris, and Shawn, of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Morehouse of Milford spent several days vacationing in Florida last week. The Brooks house might be politically divided but both Jim and Margie were in attendance at the town board meeting Monday night. Margie CD) is Our Town’s clerk-treasurer and husband Jim (R) was elected to town board in last Tuesday’s election. He will not, however, take office until January 1. Extremely high winds in Milford Sunday night were responsible for damage to the Clark Rassi pole barn west of Milford. Ceery Koontz has purhcased the Vanderveer home on Emeline street in Our Town. The home is one of the town’s landmarks and was in the Vanderveer family for at least two generations. Mrs. Russell Warner of Milford entertained the Floyd Grays of Waubee mobile home park, Milford, on Thursday. The Grays are leaving for Winter Haven, Fla., on Saturday morning.

20 YEARS AGO. NOV. 10,1965 Dane Rumfelt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rumfelt, and Mike Zimmerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Zimmerman, all of Milford, have been drafted into the United States Army. They left on Monday morning. Theo Beer, who retired last year after many years of school bus driving, has been signed by the Lakeland board to drive for the corporation on a temporary basis. Mr. Beer is driving the route of Stanley Scott of Milford. Scott is taking medication and made the request for the relief driver. Mr. and Mrs. John L. Miller and daughters, Shari and Sheli of Dewart lake spent the week end in Crown Point visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Barrett, formerly of New Paris. The regular meeting of the Milford PTO was an open house held at each building last evening. There was a short business meeting at the elementary school preceding the open house. Principals Harold Young and Donn Kesler explained the arrangements for parents visiting the rooms at the grade school and

where the teachers could be found in the high school building. 30 YEARS AGO, NOV. 10,1955 Milford Lions got a real jolt in their thinking on traffic safety when they heard Mel Slater Monday night at the Melody Case point up the seriousness of speed and disregard for the rules of conduct on the road. A Fort Wayne Lion, Mr. Slater is a forceful speaker and he sent his audience home with some serious thoughts on highway conduct. An estimated 800 persons attended open house Sunday afternoon at the new school building on West Emeline street, many seeing for the first time Milford’s fine elementary school. Among the Milford people attending the Purdue-Michigan State football game at West Lafayette Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Hoy Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Eberhardt, and Mr. and Mrs. Arch Baumgartner. Mr. and Mrs.' Don Rock of New Paris also saw the game. Mr. and Mrs. L.S. Emmert of the EM-ME-CO Corporation, Milford, spent the weekend at the “Do-It-Yourself Show” held at Navy Pier in Chicago. the Chrysantnemum show, at Adrian, Mich., last week. Betty Chatten visited Saturday night and Sunday in the home of her aunt Mr. Lawrence Polk, of Elkhart. Judge Vanderveer is driving a new car. Word received last week from Bill McDonald, who is in Miami, Fla., by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clyde McDonald, states that he was not injured in the recent hurricane that swept the city but that it was a terrible experience and he hopes to be a “minus quantity” when the next one arrives. C.R. Overleese and family and Mrs. George Felkner attended a reunion of the cousins in the family of the late John and Susan Overleese held last week at the James Brown home near Ligonier. Two fires in Syracuse area on Monday Syracuse Firemen responded to two fires Monday, Nov. 11, within a half hour of each other. Firemen were called first to a stove fire at 630 Baltimore St., at 12:56 p.m. The fire was caused by a gas leak from the stove causing an estimated SSO damage. The name of the home owner is unknown. At 1:24 p.m. the firemen were contacted by the 3M Alarm Company of a fire at Frost Antenna, SR 13S, Syracuse. When firemen arrived they found cookies burning in the stove which set off the alarm. There was no damage.

Farmers Market potluck held

The annual Farmers Market Association potluck dinner was held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the REMC building in Warsaw. Special guests among the 45 attending were Alice Long, Extension Homemakers representative, and Catherine Bause, past president of the Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers. Dane Rarick, president, welcomed the group, followed by Floyd Hollar giving the dinner prayer. Bill Moore, industrial engineer at Dalton Foundries, special euest of the association.

An election was held for 1986 officers. Serving will be: Eleanor Holt, president; Dane Rarick, vice president; Pat Walters and Susan Shepherd, cosecreta ry/treasurer. The 1986 season will begin with a producer’s meeting in April, with a tentative market opening on the first Saturday in May.
