United Methodist Church has long history in Milford
By GLEN LONG Staff Writer The United Methodist Church, at the corner of Catherine and West Streets, has had a long history in Milford. The church was established in 1850 and its first building was constructed in 1866. The second church building, built in 1900, was destroyed by fire on May 8,1920. The cornerstone for the present church building was laid on October 29,1921 and the church was dedicated on September 24,1922. At that time the church was Methodist Episcopal, which is why these words are in the stained glass window over the front door. The Methodist Episcopal doctrine included the acceptance of the role of the bishop in the government of the church, as in the Episcopal Church. A major church merger occurred in 1939 when the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Southern Church and the Methodist Protestant Church merged into the Methodist Church. Then in 1946 the Evangelical Association, merged with the United Brethren Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. This church

Tytler, president, welcomed 12 members by opening with a reading “Footprints.” During the business meeting the secretary and treasurer’s reports were read and reports were given by the various chairwomen. The group voted to secure a bulletin board for the United Methodist Women’s use. Ruth Circle will be in charge of the All Church General Meeting on November 19. This will be a carry-in dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. A thank you offering service and VCR review will be highlights of the evening. The budget for 1985 was approved and it was announced the

merged in 1968 with +Ke Methodist Church to form the present United Methodist Church. The old Evangelical and United Brethren churches came from the Pennsylvania Dutch and the services were spoken in German. The Methodist church was English speaking, when these merged in 1968 the decision was made to use the English language. The United Methodist Church is based on apostolic succession, which means that when a pastor is ordained the laying on of hands by other ministers is in direct succession from the Apostle Peter, the line having never been broken. United Methodist churches are “connectional” churches. This means they are involved, or connect, with the other churches in their conferences and districts. The United Methodist Women’s group is the largest women’s mission group in the world. It has been a very powerful mission group in modern history. The Milford United Methodist Church is in the Elkhart District and currently has about 160 members. Rev. Robert Ellison has been its pastor for I 1 ? years.

The group will be having a whole hog sausage sale and bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 23, with the sausage being ordered in advance. The bake sale will be conducted in the church and any Calvary United Methodist woman can be contacted for details. Mrs. Tytler noted other needs before the business meeting was concluded and the meeting closed with prayer.

said the Methodist Church is in the midst of a general push to increase its membership and, more importantly, broaden its outreach in the world. “We have to deepen our spiritual foundations. If we do, the rest will come,” says Rev. Ellison. He believes it is very important that visitors to the Methodist Church receive followup visits to invite them back again. To this end he has a church member, called a “minute man,” to call on area visitors within two days after their visit. The United Methodist church has used a consultation process to place ministers in the denomination’s churches for about eight years. In this method ministers are given choices of several possible churches in which to serve as pastor. Their work locations are then agreed upon in con-

Mission training continues
David and Sharon Matti are supported by the North Webster Church of God in their American Field Training Course with Wycliffe Bible Translators of Huntington Beach, Calif. They are now in phase two of their training which includes living with a family in Mexico, The following is a note from the Mattis to their church family in North Webster which was printed in the church newsletter: We want to thank you for your prayers. We know you must be praying because things are going too well to be just circumstantial. One of our prayer requests was for a good relationship with our Mexican family. Well, the Lord couldn’t have placed us in a better home. The way trainees get placed is by having the Mexican host family choose them by seeing their photographs. The director of the training camp intentionally has
Apostolic relief meeting successful
Over 200 persons from across the eastern portion of the United States were in attendance for the world relief mission meeting held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Milford Apostolic Christian Church. A panel of ladies representing sewing groups spoke on each groups individual accomplishments. From that, a list was made pinpointing the items still needed. Blankets, baby clothes, and health kits are always in demand. Most ofcthe goods will be channeled toward Central America. Speaking in the area of nutrition, Arthur Haab discussed meat canning in the poor countries. This project js being done in cooperation with the Mennonite Central Committee. Then, a discussion was held on the corn project, which entails cleaning, bagging, and shipping of corn overseas to poor nations in need. Vernon Lehman of Eureka, 111., also spoke on the desperate conditions in poor countries such as A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself. — Axel Munthe

no input on where we live. The family we are living with is very nice. There are seven kids so there’s plenty of opportunity for language learning. Our living conditions are quite satisfactory; we even have hot water. We’ve been eating everything that is served and drinking the water with no health problems. Today we went to church with our family. Being in a service we could hardly understand showed us again the need for people to have the Bible in their own language. Sometimes it’s hard to fathom so many people (over 200 million) without God's word in their language. ' We have enjoyed some cultural experiences including making tortillas, doing our laundry on a washboard, using public transportation and eating with pigeons. Thanks again for your love and prayers.
