Spikers sparkle at sectional

The Lady Warriors tried their best to equal last year’s sensational volleyball championship, but came up a little bit short in Saturday’s Northridge Sectional title match against North Wood. Last year, Wawasee pulled out' a crucial third game victory (16-14) to win the sectional title over the Lady Panthers after being dominated throughout most of the contest. In Saturday’s match, North Wood downed the Lady Warriors, 15-8, 12-15 and 15-5. Wawasee finished its season with an 8-15 record. Belinda Whitridge paced the setters with 37 in the North Wood match. Amy Bucher hit 11 serves while Michelle Harter posted 18 spikes and six kills. The Lady Warriors advanced to the championship game by beating Goshen earlier in the

day, 6-15,15-7 and 15-12. Leading in net play was Bucher, who had 14 spikes and eight kills. Traci Ostendorf nailed 11 serves while Whitridge led in setting with 37. “We had some good leadership from our seniors,” said Coach Barb Brouwer-Smith, obviously pleased about her team’s postseason performance. “Things were really positive because we pulled ourselves together and played some aggressive volleyball. I, along with the players, wish we could start the season over again because we just began to realize how good a team we are,” she added. Wawasee played so good that a 21-4 North Wood team had to sweat for every point. In addition, the Lady Warriors downed a Goshen team which had beaten them earlier in the season. “We proved that we were a good tour-

nament team,” said BrouwerSmith, backing up her pre-season assessment that Wawasee would play much better as the campaign wore on. The Lady Warriors began sectional play with a thrilling 15-13 and 15-12 win over host Northridge last Thursday. Lori Galloway and Harter sparkled in net play by posting 14 and 12 spikes, respectively. Shelley Brumbaugh had 11 serves while Whitridge had an outstanding game, boasting 54 sets. “Considering that we were well under .500, we beat some pretty good teams,” added BrouwerSmith. “We sure gave North Wood a good run for their money. The key difference was that we were better hitters. Everyone here wishes they could play again tomorrow.”

Performance is a key word for Lance By DAVE STRAUB From the time he played pee wee league football, Lance Lantz always thought he could catch the ball. But Lance ended up snapping it as a center until his football career at Syracuse Junior High was finished. “I was always a center up until my freshman year at Wawasee,” said Lance, a steady two-way performer, playing offensive and defensive end. “Then I started to grow bigger and the coaches thought I could be more useful as a receiver. ’ ’ Useful is a mild way to describe what Lance means to the Warriors these days. In addition to catching 20 passes as an offensive player, Lance is a rock-solid defensive end boasting intelligence, quickness, agility and hard hits. “I consider offense and defense about equal,” said Lance. “On offense, I have to block as well as catch passes, which is a fun part of the game. But I really like defense because it’s always fun to get in some good sticks on ballcarriers. ” Warrior Close-Up That kind of attitude obviously works for this strong 6-1, 180-pound athlete who works dilligently at everything he does. In fact, Lance is often overlooked because of his quiet consistency. Wawasee Head Coach Myron Dickerson is the first to say it. I ” ' ZjSh m ‘■Rtei 'ii flfl SL His LANCE LANTZ “I tell you, no one on the team works any harder than Lance Lantz,” the coach said. “He’s a quiet player and a quiet person who just goes out there his plays his heart out. He’s not a leader by words. He’s a leader by example and there is no finer athlete for anyone at this school to follow than Lance.” And Lance is one to follow advice. Until last spring, he admits “I always tried to tell myself that I could get by without a weight training program.” Then Lance reconsidered. He began lifting weights three days a week while mixing in some distance running in the off-season. What resulted was a stronger, better prepared player who already possessed the natural skills for gridiron excellence. “It took me a little longer to get myself -into the weightroom,” Lance reasoned. “I was kind of psyched out, seeing everyone else lift so much weight. But once I got into it, I wanted to work out more and more. It’s really a benefit because lifting makes you stronger and it makes you feel stronger. Not only does it help you physically, it helps you psychologically, too. If you feel stronger than your opponent, you will play better.” x > Lance must feel stronger. He is enjoying a good senior season with his Warrior teammates. Wawasee is presently 5-4 with an impressive sectional victory under its belt. Looking ahead to Friday’s game against Fort Wayne Carroll, Lance thinks the Warriors have a good shot at winning the Sectional 18 title, featuring either North Wood or Plymouth as the opponent — provided Wawasee beats Carroll. & “We really did a good job of shutting down Norwell,” said Lance, mentioning that Norwell beat Carroll earlier in the season. “All along, I had hoped we would have a winning season and it looks good so far. ” What also looks good is Lance’s grade point average. Excellent is a better word since the numbers read 3.96 out of 4.00. His SAT score is a lofty 1270. Lance wants to study in the medical field, preferably psychology. Yet, the college he chooses heavily depends on a possible athletic scholarship, which will involve wrestling. “It’s my true-love sport,” Lance admitted. “Though I love football, I think I stand more of a chance to wrestle in college.” Lance also stands a very good chance to win a state title in his weight class (167 lbs.) Last year, he won 32 matches as well as claiming sectional, regional and semi-state honors. Lance placed fifth overall in the state. “I’ve wrestled for 11 years,” he said. “And I look forward to it after football season. “I just love to compete,” added Lance, who has a younger brother, Josh, also on the football team. “A lot of coaches here have put a lot of time in me and I feel fortunate to be a part of one of the finest sports programs around, which is important to me. I really don’t know what I would do without sports.” And Wawasee coaches wouldn’t know what to do without Lance.
