Warriors stun Norweil

By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor Forget the records. Forget the regular season. When playoff time comes, it’s a whole different game. The Wawasee Warriors proved that last Friday night as they stunned the Norwell Knights with a 12-6 home victory in the opening round of the Sectional 18 high school football tourney. As a result, the 5-4 Warriors will host Fort Wayne Carroll, 30-6 winners over Concordia Lutheran, in a Class 3A sectional tilt this Friday. “It was just a great team effort,” said Wawasee Head Coach Myron Dickerson. “I guess people will never realize the adversity we went through this week because our practices were fair at best and we had to fill in a few positions because of injuries and a few suspensions.” Gone were Offensive Guard Mike Eastman, Tackle Hector DeLaFuente and two suspended running backs. Eastman was injured in an automobile accident while driving to school Friday morning while DeLaFuente was out with the flu. Despite these problems, the Warriors assembled a tough defense that kept the 7-2 Knights from making the big play. This

was a concern for the Wawasee coaches since Norwell featured a powerful option offense, which is known to run sweeps and reverses. “The kids just came out and did what they were told,” said Dickerson. “I can’t say enough about the effort they put forward.” What resulted from that effort was a thrilling, well-played contest. One that had all the elements of post-season drama. And the drama did not end until Steve Galegor pounced on a fumble by Todd Gerber, who caught a 10-yard pass from Quarterback Jeff Reed. This stopped a lastminute drive by the Knights, which began at their 20-yard line. The Warriors were holding onto a 12-6 lead while Norwell marched to its 46 in four plays. Then came the pass completion to Gerber. Then came Brad Traviolia, who hit the end hard, forcing him to cough up the ball with under a minute left in the game. Norwell posted the initial score with a one-yard run by Eric Shearer at the 1:05 mark of the first quarter. The Knights failed to add the two-point conversion try. Shearer’s short burst capped a 79-yard drive, highlighted by a 19-yard pass completion from Reed to Jon Leman and a 36-yard option run by Reed, which put the ball on the Warrior two.

After that, Wawasee slammed the door. “Someone had the courage to run a defense that could stop our offense, and Wawasee did it,” said a disappointed Gary Scott. The Norwell Mentor prepared his team well and came into Friday’s contest respecting the Warriors. “I really have no complaints,” Scott said. “My boys gave it all they had. If there was anything wrong, it was probably that we peaked too soon. But we gave it everything tonight.” The Warriors tied the score when Traviolia lofted a perfect 31-yard scoring strike to Nathan Rhoades, who was well-covered on the play. This came with 10:46 left in the first half. Jeff Taylor missed the extra point kick. But Wawasee broke the deadlock early in the fourth quarter when Fullback Scott McDowell exploded for a 51-yard touchdown run to make it 12-6. The 5-11, 210-pound junior rushed for 118 yards in 15 carries. McDowell also owns the longest run-scoring plays ffom scrim-

mage for Wawasee — Friday’s 51-yarder and a sparkling 88-yard breakaway in the season opener against Bremen. Mike Meek set up the final score with a 37-yard run earlier in the drive. Meek carried 10 times for 87 yards. In all, the Warriors netted 188 rushing yards. Traviolia added 75 passing yards, hitting six of 12 attempts. Norwell collected 229 total yards, of which 163 were on the ground. “We did some real good running off tackle tonight,” said Dickerson. “We were able to get a double team block on their tackles and we got some good yards. Tonight is just the start of our climb.” Scott mentioned that the Knights were affected by not having one of their best rushers — Cliff Bailey — who gained 656 yards during the regular season. Putting that aside, the heartbroken coach praised the Warriors. “Wawasee came through at the crucial moments,” he said. “They came into this game loose and played great.

A spring sign-up for next fall’s teams is being planned since soccer is a growing and popular sport that all kids involved on the teams get to play. Jill Stanley, director, says that soccer helps team members in general over all shape. The Lakeland Youth Center is proud of its program, the students, volunteers, coaches and referees commented Stanley. “It’s hoped all students in the Wawasee Community school system will want to play soccer,” she concluded.
