LEARN THROUGH YOUR FAITH TO BE CHEERFUL IN ADVERSITY

Meaning of baptism

By STEVE FOUTS Pastor It is important that every believer follows Christ in water baptism. The scripture emphatically commands us to “repent and be baptized for the remission of sins.” I know that some may wonder about the meaning of baptism. In actuality it’s a symbolic representation of the burial and resurrection of our Lord. In that sense, the only appropriate mode of baptism is immersion (going completely under the water). This beautiful ordinance depicts

what happened to us when we came to know Christ as Savior. First, upon believing, we die in sin, or as we find in Galatians 2:20, we are “crucified with Christ.” Then we are “buried with Christ in baptism.” As we come up out of the water the picture is that of being raised with Christ from the dead. And so, baptism becomes an outward sign of what has already taken place within us as a work of grace. There is no cleansing of sin in the act of baptism but as an act of obedience it serves as a testimony to men of what has-

happened in our hearts. It is only the blood of Christ that can cleanse us from sin. Baptism merely shows to the world what has already happened. Have you been baptized? If you are a born-again believer you need to be and I would encourage you to participate in this opportunity. Your willingness to follow Christ in baptism will certainly speak loudly of your obedience to the teaching of God’s word and be the example left by Him for us to follow. Give me a call at North Webster Church of God and let me know of your desire to be baptized.

The Newspaper / DIBLE ARE YOU BUILDING ON A GOOD FOUNDATION? S God, in His kindness, has taught me how to be an expert builder. I ? !' have laid the foundation and Apollos has built on it. A boy asked, “Dad, what causes wars?” “Political factors,” he answered. “You’re wrong,” interrupted the mother. “Let me tell you.” As the argument raged the boy said, “Nevermind. You’ve shown me.” St. James asked the same question, only he answered it in the Bible: “From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not; Ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain; Ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not; Ye ask and receive not, because ye

ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” There is no word in any language that is more eloquent of evil than “lusts.” Sometimes it is translated “desires” and other times “longi ings.” The entire gamut of human emotions is contained within them: ambition, anger, avarice, covetousness, desire, envying, resentment and strife. These passions, beginning with one person, break out into quarrels with others, strife wjthin communities and war among nations. When we desire to please God and not ourselves, we will have peace.
