The Wawasee girls’ swim team is faced with a tough situation: while the Lady Warriors roll up impressive dual meet wins, Coach Tim Caldwell knows their times could be better. Yet, he realizes that his swimmers are much better than recent opponents, providing little incentive for them to “race the clock” instead of being pushed by top class competitors. Anyhow, results are results, and Wawasee cruised to another victory by whipping Culver Military last night, 118-47. The win ups the overall record to 9-1-1. The Lady Warriors claimed first place in eight events. Pam Foyle and Kristi Rowe each won two events. Foyle took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.34. She also won the 500-yard freestyle, clocking 5:51.08. Rowe sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.63. She won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:11.27. Other winners

were Danielle Iwankowitsch in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.79) and Stef Berkey in the 100-yard breastroke (1:21.56). Wawasee claimed both relays — the 200-yard medley and the 400-yard freestyle. Last Tuesday, the Lady Warriors coasted past Plymouth, 111-61. Again, eight firsts were taken. Foyle won two races — the 50-yard freestyle (27.56) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.40). Jennifer Titus also claimed a pair of events. She won the 200-yard medley by posting a 2:33.06 time. Titus owned the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:12.02 showing. Jeanine Gunn won one-meter diving honors, scoring 213.80 points. And Berkey captured the 100-yard breastroke in 1:20.01. Wawasee will be on the road this coming week and will try to break the club record in dual meet victories, which is 10. Tomorrow, the Lady Warriors take on Huntington North while next Tuesday’s opponent will be Elkhart Central.

Marathon challenges Rhodes

ByDAVESTRAUB Sports Editor Milford’s Rich Rhodes runs marathons for fun, but his first experience with the 26.2-mile challenge was something more than he bargained for. “In the very first marathon I ran (at Chicago in 1981), I couldn’t even walk back to the hotel after I finished,” said Rhodes, who recently participated in that prestigious event this past Sunday. “So I got on the bus to take me back.” Humor aside, Rhodes takes running seriously. And he has finished other marathons besides the classic at the Windy City, such as ones in Fort Wayne and Notre Dame. In addition, Rhodes competes in many road races, ranging from 3-10 miles. “It gives you a sense of accomplishment,” he said. “It’s a challenge, too. Especially marathons. Once you get past ‘The Wall,’ (the 20-mile mark) you can finish it.” Sounds easy. But it isn’t. Preparing for the ultimate distance run requires training. Rhodes suggest that runners should at least train three months in advance and set a minimum schedule of 40-50 miles per week. Running long courses on weekends is also a must, according to Rhodes. While a student at Wawasee High School, Rhodes ran cross country and track and was a steady performer. Though he did not compete at Ball State University, Rhodes kept running races on his own. When it comes to marathons, he loves the atmosphere. “It gives you a sense of impor-

tance,” said Rhodes. “One of my favorite races is the Chicago Marathon because there are a lot of things around the course. Running with 12,000 athletes and having about 1 million people watch in person is a thrill.” The’ Chicago race officially starts when Mayor Harold Washington gives the ceremonial go-ahead. On this particular Sunday, Rhodes finished “somewhere in the middle,” noting that there were 70 worldclass runners competing on an overcast, 50-degree day.

Rhodes clocked a touch over four hours for this year’s race. For all this trouble, he, along with the other runners who finished, received a consolation medal. “I just run for the fun of it,” he said.

j Mfawsee golfers | j enjoy success | £ By DAVE STRAUB :j •£ Sports Editor •:• :•< This was a Cinderella story that went unnoticed. Its significance, however, is something quite remarkable. After all, a sixth place finish in the state would be a big deal for any team. But for five Wawasee golfers, it was more than that. It was ;j: special. “At the start, I figured we would go to regionals and maybe § qualify for state,” said Junior Heidi Musser. “But I never J: •< thought we would get this far.” With each dual meet win, confidence grew and the Lady $ £;• Warriors were ranked as high as 14th at one point in the season. They dropped out of the Top 20 eventually, though dual meets :$ were won convicingly. Wawasee finished 10-0. “A lot of that was based on our scores, which were not as good as a lot of other top teams,” Musser reasoned. “But a lot of $ people didn’t know that we golfed on a very tough course. Max- § welton is one of the tougher ones you can find.” jj: Thankful for being able to play this year, Musser wanted to break 90 at least once. She did this when it counted the most. Musser shot a career-best 89 at the Indiana High School Girls’ $ Golf State Finals at Muncie on Oct. 12. And it spurred a great $ team effort. . “It rained for a while that day,“ said Musser, whose nine- # hole average bounces in the mid 40s. “But it got nicer and we had to wear our shorts. I was feeling really good and my game •g went well.” 8 g: Beckie Welty’s game went well, too. The senior had a career day with an 81-stroke performance. “It was a good way to end $ $ my high school career,” she said. “I think we could have gotten first, but I was happy with sixth. ” £ § “Our scores were strong, especially the first nine holes,” added Senior Leslie Reilly. “I ran into some bad luck when I lost two strokes on a disqualification, but I was able to put together a solid game.” Reilly shot a 91. Now, she is concentrating on ims proving her gartie for college. “I want to get my scores down to the low 40s all of the time,” Reilly said of her nine-hole game. “It’s going to take a lot of work, though.” Barb Hostetter, a junior, stresses that she needs all the work x ■:*< she can get to upgrade her 18-hole game. She had one of her few !v off days on the course at the state meet, shooting a 112. “We did £ :«:■ really good, but it could have been better if I did my part,” said $ $ Hostetter. “I had a few decent outings, but I want to work $ harder on my game. So, I’m going to practice a whole lot more.” k i r rmrtvx SB?'- m A JM sr *■ -BMB **' * “ fOs mBK $ SIXTH IN STATE S $ S ft u ?• Jennifer Jorczak, another junior, was happy just to be a >:■ part of a team that broke into the state’s Top 10. “I’ve never g: been on a team this good,” she said. “But we kind of expected it to happen because we knew we were going to be good.” »> Jorczak shot a 106 at the state meet. She will be back next $ year, along with Musser and Hostetter. Coach Rudy Cesco won’t •:;! ft exactly be poor in talent after a banner season. £•: •S “As a team, they just did a great job,” said Cesco. “The $• state meet, I thought, was a solid team performance. If you look •$ at it, three of our five players had great outings and two of them <:• careered. That’s good at any meet. >•: •x “Asking for five of your golfers to career at the same meet is asking quite a bit,” he added. “That’s why you play five and S count four (scores).” S •ft That’s also why the Lady Warriors tasted great success. They had balance.
