The greatest teacher
By MARIETTA FULLER Guest Feature Writer School bells have been ringing and students have been back in the classrooms for several weeks now, with those in the higher grades electing to take certain courses and discussing their teachers. Likewise, when those who have graduated meet together they often talk about the good old school days and the good teachers from whom they had learned the most.

A doctor said to an old maid, “There’s a man for every woman and a woman for every man. You can’t beat that, can you?“ “I don’t want to bear it,” she answered. “I just want to get in on it.” Have you ever realized that salvation is something you can’t beat? It is the most needed thing in the world, yet it is the least sought after. It is the most valuable possession in the world, yet it is the least prized. It is the most highly spoken of gift of God, yet the least spoken of gift from God by man. It costs the most of all the possessions of life, yet. everyone m’ay obtain it without cost. It is provided for everyone, yet
The Newspaper BIBLE
YOU BE THE JUDGE When I wrote to you before 1 said not to mix with evil people. But when I said that I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who live in sexual sin, or are greedy cheats and thieves and idol worshipers. For you can’t live in this world without being with people like that. What I meant was that you are not to keep company with anyone who claims to be a brother Christian but indulges in sexual sins, or is greedy, or is a swindler, or worships idols, or, is a drunkard, or abusive. Don’t even eat lunch with such a person. It isn’t our job to judge outsiders. But it certainly is our job to judge and deal strongly with those who are members of the church, and who are sinning in these ways. God alone is the Judge of those on the outside. But you yourselves must deal with this man and put him out of your church. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

We are going to consider here the lessons learned from the greatest teacher who ever lived on this earth, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Jesus taught by the sea, on the mountain tops, in homes, on the streets, in the sanctuary;in fact, wherever He found the people. His was the excellent teaching through simplicity of meeting people at their levels of understanding and by using the things which were meaningful to

only a few possess it. How? The Bible answers, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” You cannot beat it, so get in on it, won’t you?" When is a burden not a burden? A biologist one day observed an ant carrying a piece of straw that seemed a big burden for it. The ant came to a crack in the earth that was too wide for it to cross. It stood for a time, as though pondering the situation. Then it put the straw across the crack and walked across it as a span. Lesson: The burden can become the bridge of progress.

them, such as lilies, birds, wind, bread, fair weather; grape vines, sowing seed, tares, talents, fig trees, etc. He took earthly things and from them taught spiritual lessons. It is no wonder the “common people heard him gladly.” Since Gcd clothes the lilies and the grass (Luke 12:27,28) and feeds the ravens (Luke 12:24), how much more will God take care of you, His children, 0, ye of little faith. Therefore, cast “all your care upon Him, for He carethforyou.” (I Peter 5:7) Receiving the Holy Spirit is likened unto the wind which “bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth; so is everyone that is born of the spirit.” (Jn. 3:8) In order to live physically, bread is needed; but to live spiritually one must daily read and study the words of the Bibles This was taught through the words, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” (Luke4:4) The greatest teachei; told believers that they were the salt of the earth (Mt. 5:13) and they realized that salt preserved their meats and kept them from spoiling. So this was a direct reference to their lives, that they could be an influence against corruption and immoral practices. Christians were also told to be a light of the world (Mt. 5:14) by the way they lived, for “by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Mt. 7:20 and Gal. 5:22,23) Even the graveyard was used in teaching a lesson to the Scribes and Pharisees who were called hypocrites for they were like tombstones, white on the outside but inside filled with dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” (Mt. 23:27) On the outside they had a form of godliness but inside their hearts were dirty. They were sinful. “No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for the rent is made worse.” (Mt. 9:16) As we believe in Christ, our old sinful life is forgiven. We then become new creatures in Christ (II Cor. 5:17) and can then be filled with the Holy Spirit. You will discover further teachings as you sit at the feet of Jesus and learn of Him, as Mary did, by daily reading and studying the words of the Bible and obeying them. Then, having found the greatest teacher, your life will never be the same, for it will be a full and meaningful one.

Rev. Hudson resigns
Rev. David Hudson, pastor of the Syracuse United Pentecostal Church resigned his position as pastor October 6. His resignation was due to his election as pastor of the Riverside /Apostolic Church, Morgantown, W.V. Rev. Hudson’s duties of the 500-member church in Morgantown began immediately with his selection as pastor the first of October. Morgantown is the home of the West Virginia University. He plans to move his family the first of November. During Pastor Hudson’s eight year tenure many strides were made in the local church with state and national recognition of the church among the constituency of the United Pentecostal Church International. Also the local congregation was responsible as the mother church with the beginning of a new church in Ligonier, pastored by Rev. Jim Ray Brickey, a former trustee of the Syracuse church. Rev. Hudson dedicated the new facility two years ago and in May of this year officiated at the mortgage burning of the new facility. Under Pastor Hudson’s service the local church completed a major renovation of the church parsonage located at 201 S. Harrison

and the installation of new church furniture and pews. Rev. Hudson served on many state and national committees of the church while also serving for five years as the Indiana District Youth President. His tenure as youth president culminated with his selection as the President of the Year of the entire 46 districts of the UPCI, the honor being conferred in the national conference in Anaheim, Calif., this past fall. Rev. Hudson just returned this past week from the International Conference of the United Pentecostal Church held in Fort Worth, Texas. Upon leaving Syracuse, Rev. Hudson states and he and his wife, Brenda, will certainly miss this community and the many fond memories it holds. “We are going to miss this area as we enjoyed being here so much and serving the fine people of this area, although we excitedly anticipate the challenge that is before us in Morgantown. Os course we do not relish the moving and changes and all that goes with it. May I take this opportunity to thank the community for your many kindnesses and the opportunity to be a part of the lakes region.”

Chapel of the Air
Members of the northern Indiana Brethren churches will be attending a fall rally of the Indiana District of the Brethren Church on Sunday afternoon and evening, October 27. The rally will be held in Cordier Auditorium on the campus of Manchester College in North Manchester. Both the 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.* services will be different material but will feature inspirational messages by David R. Mains, director of the radio broadcast, “Chapel of the Air,” and musical ministry from the musical group, Sharon and Robin. In addition to directing the radio broadcast, “Chapel of the Air,” over a nationwide network of radio stations, Rev. Mains has also spent a great deal of his energies trying to challenge Christians to make their Christianity practical in their daily lives. He spent 10 years founding and guiding an inner-city church called Circle Church into a meaningful interracial congregation that challenged the laity to integrate their spiritual gifts into the entire fabric of their church life. He and his wife, Karen Mains, have written many books about their own struggles to make Christianity practical. His most recent book is, “The Rise of the Religion of Antichristism,” released in June, 1985. He has also produced four 30-minute video tapes titled, “What Makes a Christian Family Christian.” Rev. Mains also serves as a representative of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. He thus brings a wealth of information to his messages which are geared to coincide with the Brethren National Conference theme of this year, “Faith and Family.” Sharon Brumbaugh-Hoffman and Robin Howard have been sharing a musical ministry since October of 1978. They have recorded a number of albums and have shared an effective blend of contemporary, gospel, traditional and semi-classical music with churches, women’s retreats, schools, and camps and conferences throughout wide parts of the United States, Canada and Haiti. They travel about 35,000 miles each year, sharing music and testimony of how God has been working in their lives. They

Small churches threatened
The IRS was exposed during recent public hearings in Washington, DC, for improperly giving itself broad powers that could be used to launch discriminatory and abusive audits against churches and religious organizations. The criticisms from representatives of the National Integrity Forum and the Church of Scientology focused on proposed IRS regulations implementing the Church Audit Procedures Act, a federal law designed to protect churches from lengthy and expensive audits. Both speakers pointed out, however, that despite the law’s clear intent, there were numerous instances where the proposed IRS regulations altered the law and thus left the door wide open for serious abuses. Michael Coleman, president of the National Integrity Forum and one of the original drafters of the law, complained about the IRS’s narrow definition of a church. He explained that this could lead to difficulties for churches which have schools or seminaries which they feel are integral parts of their religious practices. Rev. John D. Stanard 111, director of the Church of Scientology International Public Affairs office in Washington, DC, said that the law as passed by Congress, “clearly limits IRS to the use of information lawfully obtained and prohibits use of information from sources known to be unreliable.” He stressed that these two vital points had been completely omitted from the IRS regulations. The proposed IRS regulations present a serious and unique threat to the black religious community and to small new religions in this country. The black churches have long been the source of political and social action for the black Americans ,

but also generally keep poor records. A discriminatory audit launched by the IRS for hidden political reasons could bankrupt and close down small churches and could seriously cripple others. The Church Audit Procedures Act came about because of a growing awareness that some controls needed to be placed on the IRS in its handling of churches. The law had the support of many congressmen, including four members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Yet, with its proposed regulations, the IRS has arrogantly attempted to sidestep congressional intent and continue its tendency toward growing power and a continuing disregard for the rights of American citizens. By Alexander R. Jones, director of minority and third world affairs for the Church of Scientology. Homecoming day in North Webster The North Webster Church of the Brethren will observe Homecoming Day on Sunday, Oct. 27. A special program on the subject of criminal justice will be presented in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Guest speakers will be Galen and Wanda Mangus of Lakeville, who work for the Criminal Justice Committee of the Northern Indiana District. Their efforts are mainly concerned with the inmates of the Michigan City prison and with DISMAS, an organization interested in establishing half-way houses for released prisoners. Former members, friends and all interested persons are invited to attend the sessions at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.and to partake of the carry-in meal at-noori.
