Junior Warriors boast unity, quality

ByDAVESTRAUB Sports Editor

Think of an athletic team that does not endorse a specific school name. Think of a team that has not owned a solid identity. Think of a team that has not lost in the last two years. Think no more. Such a team does exist and has quietly defeated its opponents while going unnoticed. Meet the Wawasee Junior High School Warriors. Meet the winningest group of young cross country runners in the area. “We have not always been dominating,” said Coach Dave Stookey, who worked hard to start a combined junior high cross country program which is now in its seventh year. “We’ve started out with some modest results but the last two to three years, the kids have put together outstanding records.’’ Stookey’s assessment is supported with a 15-0 mark for the two previous campaigns. Now that the program is established, quality runners are being seeded into Wawasee High School, eventually strengthening Coach Jerry Minton’s cross country teams. Recent examples of talent include freshmen Jeff Carey, Brian Jones and Rod Coy, who now run for the high school team. Carey owns several course records while Jones and Coy were solid performers. WINNERS — The 1985 Wawasee Junior High School Warrior cross country team recently completed another undefeated dual meet season. Also, the proud Warriors display both of their invitational championship trophies. Pictured in front, from left tojight, are Eric Mock, Cuong Reed, Jason Douglas, Chad Jones and Chad Hoffert. In back are Scott Wheat, Sara Kline, Tiffany Titus, Matt Hoffert and Eric Streby.

graders Jason Douglas, Cuong Reed, Chad Jones, Chad Hoffert, Matt Hoffert and Eric Mock are exceptional prospects for next season. This group recently concluded another banner year for the Junior Warriors. However, identity problems persist. “We’ve always had some sort of program at,North Webster,” said Stookey. “But I figured to expand it because the other two junior highs didn’t have cross country teams. So, it was for kids of all three schools, but it was difficult to recruit kids because we weren’t a part of any junior high.” Another problem was that most of the runners originally came from North Webster, creating a lopsided affect. Stookey wanted a good amount of runners from all three schools; but found out that this was easier said than done. Presently, there is more balance and “the kids think of it as one team, which is the most important thing,” according to Stookey. “The purpose for a program like this is the development of positive attitudes,” added Stookey, who has coached for 22 years within the Wawasee school system. “Something like this really makes a difference in some people’s lives and the winning and losing aspect helps those who compete to understand certain things. “We try to develop that understanding because its one of the keys to their success,” he added. Though the numbers aren’t as impressive as a junior high football team, the committment is just as intense. It may even be a harder one to make since there is little “glory” compared to other sports featuring outdoor performances. Therefore, Stookey

turns a small group of runners into an advantage. “It’s kind of a neat thing,” he said. “The kids develop the closeness of a small group, and I prefer to coach kids at this particular age. They’re more receptive to what you are trying to get them to do. But at the same time, you have to be sincere because they can tell the difference.” And there has been a big difference in recent victory margins, with the exception of the Westview meet, where the Junior Warriors slipped by on a 25-30 score. “It’s been incredible the two years,” said Stookey. “Most of the teams we ran against haven’t even come close to beating us. That proves that you have to have the material before you can win consistently. Here, we have great material.” Proof of that statement comes from results. At four different meets this past season, Wawasee had its 1,2,3,4 and 5 runners finish in order. Obviously, there is talent - and it’s tapped by motivation. “My job, partly, is to motivate these kids,” Stookey explained. “It’s really necessary when you have a consolidated program since your team is not a part of any of the junior highs. ” After the hard work has been done, Stookey does not want to see the program fail. This his last year as coach of a successful team and would like to see someone with just as much enthusiasm to take over. “There’s gotta be someone put there who’s interested in getting involved with a program like this.”
