By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor With its homecoming game already spoiled, Wawasee figured to ruin the festivities for an old rival last Friday night. What resulted was a sweet 7-6 upset win over Warsaw at cold and rain-soaked Fisher Field. The Warrior victory snapped three streaks - four straight losses for Wawasee, four straight wins for the host Tigers as well as a string of wins over the Warriors since 1976. This was also Warsaw’s first Northern Lakes Conference setback of the season as its record slipped to 4-2 (4-1 in the NLC). Wawasee upped its mark to 2-4. And as it turned out, the Warriors’ first possesion proved to be the winning march when Wawasee drove 67 yards on 11 plays. This was capped off by Brad Traviolia’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Taylor. Taylor kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. K

Warriors stun Warsaw Tigers in a 7-6 win

But the Tigers threatened to pull it out late in the game when Steve Yeager lofted an 11-yard touchdown strike to Doug Flory with 1:35 remaining. With the score 7-6, Warsaw Head Coach Kevin Westover decided to go for the tie in regulation play. So, he called on Bill King to kick the extra point. But the senior missed, kicking the ball low. “I thought we could take them in overtime at that point,” explained Westover. “The kicker just didn’t do his job. He kicked it low. But you can’t blame the kid because there are pros making S2B, S3B or $48,000 and blow kicks like that. What’s the big deal? Wawasee beat us and you gotta give them credit. They played a good game,” he added. The Warriors needed a good game, too. A win against Warsaw proved perfect medicine for Wawasee Coach Myron Dickerson, who was not surprised when Westover sent in the kicking team. “I wouldn’t have been sur-

The kids believe that and if they didn’t, we wouldn’t have won tonight,” Dickerson explained. “We haven’t played our greatest football game yet.” ~ The contest wasn’t over when King missed the extra point, either. The following kickoff was fumbled but recovered by a Wawasee player on the eight yard line. The Warriors cinched it with about a minute left when Traviolia scampered 11 yards on a naked bootleg while facing a third and six situation from the 12. The Tigers would never get the ball back since they used up their timeouts on defense, hoping to hold Wawasee to one series of

downs and get good field position since the Warriors were staring at a stiff wind, not to mention a steady downpour of rain. “We ran two dive plays to keep Warsaw’s defense inside,” said Dickerson. “Then we felt the bootleg would be open, and the play worked for us.” Wawasee also had excellent field position most of the contest. After the Warriors tallied their only score, Steve Sturgill intercepted Yeager’s second down pass from the Wawasee 34 and returned it to Warsaw’s 12. The Warriors could not advance the ball, and Bruce Jackson’s 35-yard field goal attempt was no good. Wawasee missed two other field goal tries after the Tiger defense stuffed any hopes for touchdowns when the Warriors threatened to put the game away.

“You take a couple plays here, a couple plays there, and it’s an even game,” said Westover. “Our defense played good ball and you would usually expect to win when you hold the other team to one score.” Dickerson also praised his defense. After all, he made an adjustment that may have strengthened it by switching from the usual 5-2 front to a four man line. The results were outstanding since Wawasee only yielded one score to a team that has been ringing up nearly 28 points an outing. “The defense did a super job tonight," said Dickerson. “And that first drive on offense was wonderful. We executed well when we had to.” The Warriors held Warsaw to 175 total yards and 13 first downs. They contained the Tiser

The bowl for life will be October 19-26, in Wawasee Bowl. “The money our bowlers earn will help continue St. Jude Hospital’s life-saving study of childhood cancer that has become so important to children all over the world,” said Linda Brower, Bowl-For-Life chairwoman. “We’ll be showing that we care about children by helping this cause. Please support your bowler with a generous pledge and then help them get the funds to use as soon as the Bowl-For-Life is over.” Each bowler uses the sponsor form to register before he or she bowls. At the end of the bowling, the score sheet is checked and the sponsor form signed to show that the bowler earned the pledges. Bowlers will then return to the sponsors to collect the pledge. Sponsor forms are available at Wawasee Bowl. Anyone who wishes to back a bowler with a pledge may contact Linda Brower, North Webster, for information.

Fullback Rich Seitz to 85 yards on 22 carries while Yeager completed only seven of 16 passes for 54 yards. He was intercepted once. Wawasee netted 209 yards on offense, with 117 of those resulting from a balanced running attack that featured Mike Meek and Rob McKibben. Traviolia hit nine of 20 passes for 92 yards and was picked off twice. Now, Warsaw is tied with North Wood for the league lead and will play the Panthers next week. Close behind in the NLC race are Plymouth, Concord and Rochester - all owners of 3-2 conference marks. “There are no quitters on this team,” said Westover, obviously disappointed that the Tigers could not take sole possession of first place. “We’ll be back next week.” The Warriors will travel to Northridge next Friday for a nonconference game. It will start at 7:30.
