A new church interview
By GtEN LONG Staff Writer Karen and Thorpe Mitchell, husband and wife, are pastors of Northern Lakes Christian Center Church, which holds its worship services in the Palace of Sports in North Webster. Thorpe welcomed the chance recently to answer some questions about the new church. Q. Why have another new church? We have many in the area. A. First of all, everyone needs Jesus and the fellowship of other believers. The majority, even those who profess to be Christians, do not attend church. Different people respond to differed leadership, customs, theology, etc. We will attract people that other churches don’t. Q. What is different about your church? A. In order for me to explain this the reader must understand that there are basically three recognized approaches to Protestantism. Ecumenical Liberalism emphasizes the social gospel. This is the predominant view of the main line denominations. That view is well represented in our community. Evangelicalism emphasizes personal salvation and more accurately reflects orthodox Christian theology. These are the descendants of the fundamentalists that battled liberal thought which became dominant in the main line denominations in the first half of this century. Although they were defeated for control of the church in that time frame, the second half of this century has seen their star rise considerably, especially in relation to the liberals. There is a very wide range of Evangelicalism, from fundamentalist holiness groups with strict moral codes to new wave evangelicals. Winona Lake has been a historical bastion of this thinking. Leaders like Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham represent this branch of Protestantism. Again, these views are well represented in this area. Pentecos t a 1 i s m , like Evangelicalism, emphasizes personal salvation. But, in addition, Pentecostals have included a whole new dimension. They believe that the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit are in operation today just like in the first century church in the Book

of Acts. They believe the Bible literally and expect miracles to happen. Because of this simple faith, the miraculous often does occur. Although there has been a Primitive Church in existence outside the established church since the first century, the restoration of the gifts of the Spirit has been most prevalent in this century. Today, Pentecostalism is referred to as the third force of Christianity, after Catholicism and Protestantism. It is the major Christian force outside the United States. The Assemblies of God denomination is by far the fastest growing one in this country. Its charismatic movement is Pentecostal in origin. Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker represent Pentecostalism. There are Pentecostal churches in this area, but they have a smaller impact on this community than they do nationally. Q. What is a Charismatic? A. I jokingly refer to a Charismatic as basically a Pentecostal that moved uptown. Originally, Pentecostals seemed to draw people from the less affluent segments of society, just as in Jesus’ day, and consequently carried a social stigma with the Protestant establishments. That is not nearly as true today. A Charismatic is often referred to as a “neo-Pentecostal.” That means that he or she believes in the spiritual gifts but does not belong to a classical Pentecostal denomination. In the past 25 years all the major liberal denominations have officially recognized the Charismatic movement and have organizations that promote it from within. The Episcopals and Presbyterians are particularly supportive. Since the late 19605, the Charismatic movement has had a trememdous impact on the Catholics and has built bridges of unity between Protestants and Catholics. In addition to those Charismatics that belong to a traditional denomination it is estimated that there are 28 million people who belong to independent Charismatic churches. This is clearly a major move of the Holy Spirit in our generation. Pat Robertson would be considered a Charismatic. Q. Is your church Charismatic? A. By the generally accepted

definition I would say yes, but technically I would call us “neoCharismatics.” That is, we believe in personal salvation, the gift of the Spirit and the power of faith and love. It is the faith message and the authority of the believer that takes us beyond the Charismatics. Q. When you mention faith, naturally the Faith Assembly comes to mind. Are you connected to that in any way? A. No, in fact Dr. Freeman would have considered us heretics. Q. Are you like them in any way? A. In that we both believe in the gifts of the Spirit we are similar. We both believe that healing is in the atonement and can be activated by faith. Q. Then how do you differ? A. We do not believe that the medical profession is sorcery or in any way evil. Healing is a blessing and doctors assist in and promote healing. Satan does not do us good. We have seen many healing miracles through God’s intervention. We see it in the Bible and we have seen the manifestations of healing by faith, but if a person wants medical help we’ll agree with them for a speedy recovery. We will not condemn people who seek medical assistance. We don’t shun those who disagree with our views. We’re not the only ones going to heaven. It is our desire to reach out to love the unloved. Our emphasis is on love rather than on doctrine. Love is the great commandment and it is necessary for us to choose to love God and each other if we are to walk in the miraculous. Q. How did you prepare for the ministry? A. Both Karen and I are university graduates. I majored in philosophy, never dreaming that I’d be called to the ministry. I also have a master’s degree in economics, but that isn’t particularly germane to our present calling. Actually, Karen and I began getting serious about the things of God in 1978. We spent three years traveling around the country attending meetings and seminars. Our house is loaded with books and tapes. In 1982 I began traveling with Dr. Lester Sumrall in South Bend. He is one of the most historically significant men of God alive today. He was brought up in a classical Protestant

His current ministry centers in traveling to churches around the country to encourage . new pastors. He is gone virtually every week. I have learned from working with him and seeing the fruits of what God is doing today. He recognized the call on Karen and me and ordained us both. Q. Are you affiliated with Dr. Sumrall’s church? A. dependent churches that is growing rapidly. We also hope to become part of the local ministerial association. Q. What makes you think you are on the right track? A. First of all, I can read. Once you get into the Bible, you find it remarkably straightforward. Couple that with an understanding of church history and you can see that our present position is the logical outcome of the reformation. God is progressively revealing more and more of the spirit realm to us just as he has the natural realm over the past 200 years. Also, through our travels I have seen the current move of God that is still so new that outside scholars are not even aware of it. Nonetheless, since the statistical growth makes recognition of the trend unavoidable I am doing a book on it. The third factor is our congregation. The members are solid in agreement and are receiving God’s blessings. We have experienced minimal turnover in the past year.
