Gaylord E. Jones succumbs following prolonged illness
Gaylord E. Jones, 64, Pine Terrace Apartments, Box 476 Syracuse, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in Goshen Hospital, following complications of an extended illness. Jones was born on September 2,1921, in Mentone, to VeVon and Nina (Hall) Jones. He married the former Evelyn Bitner on July 27, 1940, in Milford. Jones had resided in Syracuse since 1940 with a winter residence in Naples, Fla. He was a mobile home executive and former owner of Monarch Industries. In 1977, he planted the Apple Valley Farms, north of Syracuse. Jones was a member of the Morrings Presbyterian Church, Naples, Fla., and attended Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 454 Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne; Arba Shrine, Naples, Fla.; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Syracuse-

Heartbeats Health Festival at Goshen
In cooperation with Governor Orr’s statewide health project, Goshen Hospital, the Goshen Park Department, Goshen Col- - lege Continuing Education, Goshen YWCA, and Greencroft, are sponsoring a Heartbeats Health Festival for the Goshen community on Sept. 14. The festival will be held at Goshen College Gym from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning at 8 a.m. there will be a 10K run and a 3K walk. Preregistration and packet pick-up will be at the performance Athletic Center, Linway Plaza, Goshen, on Sept. 12 and 13. Race day registration is from 6:45-7:45 a.m. in the Goshen College Gym. All proceeds will be presented to Goshen Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Many awards will be presented at 10 a.m. in the gym. Different agencies will provide informational displays and materials while Elkhart County Blood Pressure Program will do blood pressure screening. Additional medical screenings will include blood typing, cancer risk, lung capacity, diet analysis, Glaucoma, dental/oral, sickle cell anemia and blood chemistry. Goshen Hospital surgery department will have a gastroscope and bronchoscope for viewing. The orthopedic unit will have a total

He was preceded in death by infant twins on May 30,1944. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, Sept. 8,-at 2 p.m. in Calvary United Methodist Church. Rev. When the EMS arrived the infant had been born and the mother and child were transported to Goshen Hospital. Frederick C. Dust 111, 60, 107 West North St., Syracuse, came to the fire station at .7:12 p.m. Thursday after he cut his finger on a lawn mower blade. The cut was cleaned and bandaged and he was advised to see his doctor for possible stitches. Bicycle stolen from Syracuse yard A bicycle valued at $125 was stolen from-a yard in Syracuse on Saturday night, police said. Greg Sawyer, 712 Baltimore Street, reported Sunday morning that his blue and red, nickelplated ‘Mongoose’ bicycle had been stolen from his yard. Police are investigating the theft. mitted three days earlier. He had been in serious health for the past year. Peffley was born on April 9, 1910, in Goshen, the son of Bert and Alice (Pickrell) Peffley. He had been a lifetime Goshen resident. On September 19, 1930, he married LaVerne McFarland at Cassopolis, Mich. She preceded him in death on August 28,1984. Peffley started his newspaper career with the Goshen Democrat. He joined the Goshen News-Times on January 2, 1930, and then served as sports editor for 12 years. He was named city editor in 1944 and became editor January 1, 1960, serving in that capacity until his retirement in January 1972 due to ill health. He was a 1928 Goshen High School graduate, playing quarterback on the football team. During the 19305, he and his brother, Jay, were well known for being high school basketball referees. In 1965, he was named honorary referee for the Goshen relays. The deceased was a member of Plymouth Church of Christ, Goshen, and member of Goshen Moose Lodge. Surviving are two brothers, Robert, Goshen and Syracuse Lake, Jay, Syracuse; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Lois) Bowman, Findlay, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. in Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, with Rev. Paul F. Koepke, pastor of Plymouth United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be directed to the Plymouth United Church of Christ. Ruth Wertenberger Born In North Webster ' Ruth (Naomi) Wertenberger, 77, r 3 Syracuse, formerly of Elkhart, died Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw. She had moved to Kosciusko County in 1960 after living 20 years in Elkhart. Mrs. Wertenberger was born in North Webster on January 27, 1908,, to Henry and Abigail (Willard) Outcelt. She was a retired employee of Ziesel’s Department Store, Elkhart. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Kay) Lowe, Syracuse; three grandchildren/ Mrs. Christopher (Mary) Cook, Mrs. Steve (Linda) Yoder, and George Lowe, all of Syracuse; one great-grandson; and one nephew, DeWitt Mullett, North Webster. Kenneth Frailey Sen Os Syracuse Res Went Kenneth Frailey, 17, Syracuse, formerly of Janesville, Wis., son of Patricia Frailey, Syracuse, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 10:29 a.m. in Goshen Hospital. Frailey was bom on May 6, 1968, in Elkhorn, Wis., the son of Larry J. and Patricia Frailey. He had registered to attend Wawasee High School this year and was a member of the Janesville Civil Air Patrol. Surviving are his mother, Patricia Frailey, Syracuse; his father, Larry J. Frailey, Janesville, Wis.; one sister, Shelly J. Frailey, Delavan, Wis.; and grandparents, Lyman and Madge Frailey, Macedonia, DI., and George Orsbourne, Janesville. Mrs. Pryor and her husband, Michael, owned and operated the Pryor Grocery in Syracuse for many years. She was born on August 14, 1893, in Wanatah to Gustav and Ernestine (Paegel) Obereigner. She married Michael Pryor in January 1916. He preceded her in death in 1953. Mrs. Pryor was a member of Salem Church, Wanatah. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Maria Pigpin, Wilmington, Del.; two nieces; and a friend with whom she resided, Martha Ruch.
