Warriors win opener 27- 7 over visiting Bremen Lions

By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor

Unlike the original Cinderella script, this one flourished from the start. No humble moments. No sudden changes. No pumpkins. It was complete.

And by midnight last Friday, the Wawasee Warriors were well into celebrating their seasonopening 27-7 rout over Bremen at home. “Myron (Head Coach) Dickerson told us after the game that we really blew them out,” said Assistant Coach Jim Jones. “Maturity is making a big difference on this team.” Blessed with 14 returning lettermen, the Warriors immediately went to work after the opening kick-off. They mixed running and passing plays, featuring Quarterback Brad Traviolia and running backs Ron Gerber and Joe Melendez. Add two catches by Flanker Brett Traviolia. The result: a 68-yard drive - capped off with with a two-yard touchdown pass to Brett. The younger Traviolia also caught an option pass from Gerber that covered 24 yards and sparked the first Warrior march. Wawasee continued its surge when Scott McDowell blocked a Tim Feldman punt late in the first quarter. The Warriors took over on the Bremen 38 and eventually scored on a one-yard plunge by Gerber. Wawasee upped the count to 14-0 as Traviolia hit Eric Jones for the two-point conversion. The short drive was

highlighted by Traviolia’s 20-yard pass to Ben Beer, putting the Warriors on the goal line. But the opening act wasn’t finished. Wawasee spiced up the script even more when Traviolia intercepted a Joey Bennett pass halfway through the second quarter. The Lions returned the favor when Rob Coffel picked off Traviolia after the Warriors took over on the Bremen 33, but Coffel fumbled it away while being gang "tackled by a host of Wawasee defenders. Rob McKibben then pounced on the loose ball, keeping Warrior scoring hopes alive. Operating from the 22, Traviolia hit Lance Lantz for 15 yards and followed with a fiveyard touchdown strike to Beer. Jeff Taylor kicked the extra point, making it 21-0. “It was an exciting thing for us and the players, leading by 21 points in the first half,” said Jones, who along with Assistant Kim Lobsiger, filled in for Dickerson during post-game interviews. The head coach had to meet with parents concerning the schools’ code of conduct rules. “We showed that we were capable of running and throwing the lootball and we established that pretty early in the game.” “We have a well-rounded offensive machine,” added Lobsiger. In all, Wawasee rolled up 337 yards total offense, of which 226 were gained rushing. Os the 111 yards passing, Traviolia threw for 69 and two touchdowns. The 6-2 senior completed eight of 20 attempts. McDowell led the Warriors

with 92 yards rushing on just two carries. His last effort was an 88-yard touchdown run with 4:20 left in the game, completing Wawasee’s assault on the Bremen defense. Gerber also enjoyed a good night, racking up 86 yards on 19 carries. The Lions, however, spoiled the shutout when Quarterback Jamie Bellman hit Coffel for a five-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining in the game. Dan Blair added the extra point. Bremen drove 70 yards for the score. Overall, the Lions gained 226 yards, many of which came in the final period when the Warriors emptied their bench.

Swimmers open season on Septemberl2vs East Noble

For Tim Caldwell, the key word is solid. That’s what he uses to describe the Wawasee girls’ swim team, which consists of 23 members, 13 of whom are veterans. “Right now, I guess we look pretty solid,” said Caldwell, who enters his second season as the girls’ coach. “We may not have any outstanding individuals, but we’ll always have three good swimmers for every event.” Leading the Lady Warriors will be seniors Pam Foyle and Jeanine Gunn. Foyle owns school records in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events while Gunn qualified for the last year’s state diving finals. Other distance freestylers include seniors Julie McDaniel and

“Our defensive line did a good job,” said Jones. “Because of that, our linebackers looked good.” Defensive standouts included Steve Sturgill, McDowell (seven tackles, two sacks) and Travis Rieff (nine tackles). “There were not too many tackles for us to report, which is good,” Lobsiger said. “That means that we controlled the game.”

Bremen Head Coach Dennis Sienicki agreed. “We didn’t get a chance to move the ball until late in the game, and it was over by then,” he said. “We have a lot of inexperienced players and it

And our defense didn’t get enough pressure on the quarterback.” “With every first game, there are a lot of things we should improve on, like covering passes,” Jones said. “But the kids went out and did a good job.” ‘ln terms of balance, this is the most talented team we’ve had in a long time,” added Lobsiger, perhaps noting that a promising script to for the young season is far from finished. The Warriors will try to follow this act when they travel to Rochester, where the next game will start at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.

(senior) and sophomores Kris Neff and Danielle Iwankowitsch. Senior Charlene Fisher will compete in the backstroke. The Lady Warriors also boast good divers. In addition to Gunn, others include Julie Emmert, Shelley Boyer, Rochelle Denney, Jill Corson and Schmahl. “We always seem to have good divers here,” Caldwell said. “That’s one of the areas we’ve always had success in.” Kris Southworth, Caldwell’s assistant, will coach the divers. Now that Caldwell has a good idea about his personnel, practices have become more intense. “The first two weeks, we’ve been real shaky,” he said. “It’s like the girls had their* minds on something else instead of swimming. But this last week, we’ve really come off some good practices. Since school has started, we look a lot better.” Therefore, Wawasee would like

to perform better this year. “Realistically, we would like to improve on our 9-5-1 record,” said Caldwell. “And we would like to move up from fifth place in our conference, too.” Caldwell thinks Goshen and Concord will be the teams to beat in the Northern Lakes Conference. “It will be a tight race,” he said. “And we practically ‘have the same team we had last year. But we have to get better. Wawasee opens its season against East Noble Sept. 12 at home. The meet starts at 6:30.

Girls golf team 5-0

The Wawasee girls’ golf team continues to roll as the Lady Warriors upped their dual meet record to 5-0. Wawasee is also ranked 14th in the state up to this point. On Aug. 26, the Lady Wariiors hosted a triangular meet against Manchester and LaVille. Wawasee finished with 205 strokes while LaVille and Manchester scored 245 and 262, respectively. Beckie Welty led the Lady Warriors with 46 strokes. Heidi Musser and Leslie Reilly followed with 48 each. Last night, Wawasee traveled to East Noble and won comfortably with 199 strokes. Welty again was tops with a score of 43. Musser shot a 49 while Barb Hostetter finished with 53 strokes. “There’s a lot of room for improvement,” said Coach Rudy Cesco. “But we’re getting a lot of statewide exposure becuase of the ranking. We played well in some tournaments and that got us some recognition. Yet, we’re looking to imporve our overall game to finish strong.’’
