Becky Orten: At 16 she is becoming a talented artist
By JIM BRODERICK Staff Writer Becky Orten is not sure what she wants to do with the rest of her life. But it’s a safe bet she has more options than the average 16-year-old. “I haven’t decided what I want to do yet,” said the Syracuse Christian School student. Becky’s interests are as varied as the talents she brings to each activity she pursues. Among all of her interests, she puts art at the top of the list. Ever since she discovered her artistic talents in third grade, Becky has been developing herself as an artist. Primarily interested in sketches, she has also experimented with sculpture and other forms of art. “I tried sculpture in an art class a couple of years ago,” she said. “I made a ‘Garfield,’ which I entered in a school art show. I guess it turned out pretty well. My teacher said she wanted to keep it.”
Profile
Becky’s mother, Miriam, is at a loss to explain where her daughter acquired her artistic skills. “She didn’t get them from me,” Mrs. Orten said. One of Becky’s three sisters, Rhonda, 22, may be the source of her artistic flair. “Rhonda is also very artistic,” said Mrs. Orten. “I found out how talented she was when she drew a picture of ‘Tony the Tiger,” said Mrs. Orten. Becky is the youngest of four sisters, ranging in age from 22 to 16. She has no brothers. Becky’s father, Eric, is also very proud of his daughter’s successes, according to Mrs. Orten. The whole family is waiting to see what the future holds for Becky.

“I’ve also thought about becomming a lawyer,” Becky said. “I don’t really know why, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about.” Perhaps Becky’s academic interests have something to do with her desire to enter the legal profession. She maintains she enjoys the majority of her school work, citing art, English, history, and typing as a few of her favorite subjects, ‘n like most of my classes,” she said. There are, however, a few subjects she faces with less than enthusiasm. Math, for instance. “I’m not too fond of math,” she said. “Also, if you ask me, I think literature is a little weird,” she said. Another of her favorite courses is speech, which also may have something to do with her wanting to become a lawyer. But her enjoyment of speech class may be what’s leftover from an earlier ambition: a desire to perform oh stage. “When I was younger, I told my mom I wanted to be an actress. That’s kind of changed now,” said the 16-year-old Orten. According to Mrs. Orten, Becky’s had a lot of ambitions, some of which she has attempted to accomplish. “At one time, ” Mrs. Orten said, “Becky wanted to be a singer. She was going to run away from home. She made it outside the door, but that was about as far as she got.” Becky’s mother says whatever her daughter does is fine with her, but hopes that Becky will give her all to whatever she gets into. “It wouldn’t really matter what she did, as long as she did her best,” Mrs. Orten said. Becky doesn’t believes she’ll have any trouble keeping up that end of the bargain. “Whatever I decide to go into, I’ll keep at, as long as I think it’s right for me. If I find out it isn’t what I want to do, that’s when I’ll stop doing it.” And if Becky should happen to become a successful lawyer, or an accomplished artist, will her mother also share in whatever profits come Becky’s way?

LOUISA'S LETTER (».- '.■) : gg:;
Dear Louisa, I am a girl of twenty-one and I live in this apartment with another girl. We get along fine together and usually agree on things. But something has come up that we think differently about so we thought we would write and find out what you thought about this situation. About two months ago I was eating lunch and this man came in and as there was not table he ' asked if I minded him sitting at my table. Well after a while we started talking and he seemed very nice. After that we happened to meet there several times and he asked me for a date. He travels for some company but I don’t know anything about him but I think I could fall in love with him without much trouble. My roommate thinks I would be foolish to date him unless I know something about him — what company he works for and whether or not he is married. What do youthink? P.F. — Penn. The Fyes’ parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Fye and Lindsay visited during the weekend. Also visiting over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Phil Reinerand son, Brent, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Answer: I think your roommate has a point. Certainly the young man should let you know for whom he is working and whether he is single or married. Girls dating married men are usually looking for trouble. ' Louisa Dear C.W. (Tenn), When people have been hurt it sometimes takes a long period for wounds to heal. It might help if you talk to your minister or an older friend of your husband’s that he respects. Tell him or her that you hope both of you can look to the future and not to the past. Perhaps the respected friend can help get the message across, as the path to happiness. You seem to be on the right track. Love and warmth should, over the long term, heal the wounds if he loves you and wants them healed. Good luck. Louisa Address: Louisa, Box 532, Orangeburg, S. C. 29115 m pnf I 9 h ■ .....
