We Thank You One And All! We did reach “The Goal” to purchase the jaws unit at the recent pork chop day event. Total cost of the unit was $10,650.00. The amount was raised by total community effort in less than a one year time span. MILFORD FIREMEN ARE PROUD TO BE A PART OF A COMMUNITY THAT CARES.. Purchase of the unit would have been impossible without the help of all of you plus the local service organizations and Campbell’s IGA. The unit is available now and will be in use as of Friday, August 9. Firemen are receiving training this week. Once again we thank you for helping to make our job easier in emergency situations. Life in the fast lane
By FR. PHILIP MORGAN Guest Feature Writer The dust had settled now on the Indianapolis Speedway the drivers of the 69th Indianapolis 500 looked to the rpst of the season that lay before them. It was the next race that was important then, and then the next, and then the next. For the drivers it’s not one day at a time but rather one race at a time. To plan too far ahead is just impractical. Each race becomes a challenge, each race becomes a duel with ones personality, ones strength, ones mental stability. In short each race becomes a battle to both survive and win. Standing in the pits observing these knights of modern world the adrenalin begins to flow as quickly as the gasoline through these high performance engines. A car flashes past at more than 200 mph, a speed which not many years ago would have claimed the world land speed record, and then another and another. Why do they do it these men who live on the edge of reality, these representatives of mankind who like knights of old are prepared to risk life and limb to please the packed crowds? Is it money? — there’s certainly plenty of reward; is it fame? — there certainly plenty of adoration; but it’s none of these things; it’s simply the challenge! Why climb Everest, who go to the moon, why race at Indianapolis? In short because it’s there! That thrill of going where no man has gone before, of doing what no person has done before is the over-riding power which drives these men to the limit of their ability and to push their machines to the edge of their endurance. Off the track the drivers can relax, it’s the mechanics and the pit crew who are in the driving seat, so to speak. They know that success or failure depends on their skill, their expertise, and during a race their speed as well. Out of their cars you begin to realize that the person who’s just piloted a piece of metal at phenomenal speed is simply a man of flesh and blood just like the rest of us. They are people who rarely talk though of that very real possibility that everytime they drive out onto that track they may not return in one piece. That thought hangs over them like a cloud, shadowy and grey and never wholly cleared away. Standing next to the men who live their life on the edge of reality and talking with

them one gains a very real appreciation of the stability of one’s own life. A sense that life in the fast lane, although exciting, is just too fast for most of us who would prefer to keep our feet on the ground, and stand with the others, who waved at Columbus as he set sail for the edge of the known world.
