Doug Vanette wins Maxwelton title

Play concluded this past weekend in the Maxwelton Club Championship with Doug Vanette of Ligonier being named the club champion. Play began the weekend of July 27 with 36 holes of stroke play. The low four qualifiers in each of four flights continued on to match play this past Saturday. In the C flight Craig Gregory of Goshen defeated Larry Leek of Ligonier and Rex Lindeman defeated Ed Fortier, both are from Goshen. In the afternoon finals Gregory defeated Lindeman to claim the C flight title. In the B flight semi-final action, Jim Hanson of Goshen defeated Rick Thompson of Pierceton and Harold Bartman of Syracuse defeated Ed Peffer of Ligonier. In the finals Bartman defeated Hanson. A flight action found Jeff Moore of Kimmel disposing of Bob Lesley of Wakarusa and Glen Steele of Ligonier defeating Clancy Brannum of Syracuse. The A flight finals found Jeff Moore defeating Glen Steele 2 up thru 18 holes. Championship flight finalists were Doug Vanette and Lloyd Slabach of Ligonier, Jim Lyke of Goshen and Scott Norris of Albion. Morning action found Call for tennis players Any young man attending Wawasee High School this fall who is interested in playing tennis should report to the high school for practice on Monday, Aug. 12. Practice times are 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Athletes are reminded to turn in their completed physicals forms at that time. Forms are available at the Wawasee High School office. Two attend camp Shawna Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Miller of Dewart Lake; and Melissa Rector, daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. Clyde Rector of Hammond, summer residents of Dewart Lake, returned home Friday after attending the Orignial Hoosier Basketball Camp on Lake James near Angola. Shawna will be an eighth grader at Milford and Melissa will be a sophomore at Hammond High School, Hammond. Girls interested in ploying volleyball ore to report Aug. 12 Barb Smith, varsity volleyball coach at Wawasee Community High School, has asked that all girls interested in playing volleyball this year report to the high school gym for practice on Monday, Aug. 12, at 8 a.m. Girls are to have a physical before going to practice. Golf practice begins Monday for WHS girls Anyone interested in participating in girls’ golf at Wawasee High School should report to the Maxwelton Golf Club at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, for practice. Coach Rudy Cesco says it is important that potential team members make the first practice. Completed physical forms must be presented to Coach Cesco on Monday morning. Girls who do not have physical forms may pick them up in the main school office Syracuse Travel Team wins fourth The Syracuse youth league travel team claimed fourth place in the AABC sanctioned Pee Wee Reese state tournament at Fort Wayne. Though Syracuse lost its first game to Garrett 1,13-12, it bounced back to. beat Garrett 2, 15-13. Syracuse, however, lost to Hammond in the semi-finals, giving it a fourth place finish. The team is coached by Rick Baker, Garry Ringler and Tom Finlinson. Syracuse will host a single elimination tourney at the Rotary Field August 5-9.

Vanette defeating Slabach 1 up on the 18th hole and Norris defeating Lyke in a playoff. In an exciting afternoon match, Norris took a 1 up lead on Vanette at the end of nine but the eventual champion won 3 of the next six holes to take a 2 up lead with 2 holes to play. Norris won the tough 17th with a par to pull to just one down. On the 18th, Norris put his second shot to within six feet of the flag arid threatened to send the match into sudden death but Vanette made a 15-foot birdie putt to end the match. Tippy sailing results The Lake Tippecanoe Sailing Club raced again this past Sunday. Open Class winners were: Bill Allen of Warsaw, first place, sailing a Hobie 14’; Phil Jung of Converse, second, sailing a Super Porpoise; Mick Case'of Leesburg with Dave Straub of Syracuse as crew, third, sailing a Rodes 19’ and Ron Brown of Granger, fourth, sailing a Laser. In the Hobie 16’ Class, Howard Johnson of Leesburg took top honors with lola Krause as crew. Dave and Shirley Hamer of Carmel copped second. In addition, Johnson won the First Annual Commodore’s Challenge Cup on July 28, which was a rigorous 10-mile course. The race was scored by the Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system. Taking second place was Steve Hart of Kokomo, who sailed a Super Porpoise. Allen claimed third while Will Shroyer of Mishawaka took fourth in a Hobie 16’. The next race will be on Sunday, Aug. 25. There will be a skipper’s meeting a 11 a.m. at Patona Bay. Races will begin at 12:30. For further information, contact Commodore Al Hayes at 453-3815. Wrestlers win honors at the White River games Wawasee High School continues to achieve fame through two of its premier wrestlers, Steve Sturgill and Brad Traviolia. Both earned great distinction at the White River Park games at Indianapolis this past weekend. Sturgill took first place in the 220 lbs. class while Traviolia claimed third at 154 lbs. Both made in the finals bracket. Former WHS coach inducted into hall of fame Former Wawasee High School basketball and baseball coach Robert Heady will be inducted into the Ball State University Athletic Hall of Fame on September 14. Heady coached Warrior teams in both sports during the 1973-74 and 74-75 seasons. He also won a basebmß sectional championship during his stay at Wawasee. In addition, Heady is the new head basketball coach at Carmel High School. Before earning that position, he coached nine seasons at Shenandoah where he won seven conference crowns, two sectionals, a regional and a semistate championship at Indianapolis in 1981. Heady’s record at that school was 119-59. Also, Heady attended Eastern Kentucky University and lettered in baseball and basketball. He later enrolled at Ball State, where he also lettered in those two sports.
